The garda then went on to ask the confidential recipient to process the complaint, questioned the fact that nothing was happening and then asked for an update on the position. I would like to ask the confidential recipient whether he said to her that it had gone too high to cover it up and that it had to be investigated. He then suggested to her not to forget his proximity...

John McGuinness: I do not know whether he made those comments to the Minister but I believe the person told me that in truth and I believe that the Minister should investigate it. Along with the confidential recipient and his remarks, there are cases within the Department that should be examined. The confidential recipient suggested to this person that she should play the political game and that then she...

John McGuinness: This is not politics, this is me, a Member of Parliament, asking the Minister for Justice and Equality to do what he should do.

Allegations in relation to An Garda Síochána: Statements (Resumed) (26 Feb 2014)

John McGuinness: I have listened carefully to the debate. I point out to the previous two speakers from the Government backbenches that when I spoke on this issue in the House last Thursday morning there was no member of Fine Gael in the House. That matter was raised at the time by a former member of Fine Gael. Out of respect for other Members, I responded that they were probably watching the proceedings...

John McGuinness: With regard to the policy role, which was mentioned by Deputy Eoghan Murphy, have the Secretaries General or Accounting Officers now been told that they can comment on policy? I read out a caution here every week - I can say it in my sleep by now - that the committee members should also refrain from inquiring into the merits of a policy-----

John McGuinness: The other query is about the property tax. When people tick the box for the valuation of their property they are genuine about the valuation. However, consider how the market is going now. What happens if that person sells the home to move on and gets a sudden windfall because of house prices going back up?

John McGuinness: I have a question for the Comptroller and Auditor General regarding audit standards, which also relates to the point Deputy Eoghan Murphy was making. If, for example, somebody wished to look at an audit standard and that audit standard was to demand how Departments spend their money or how a rate was struck in local government, is that something that is part and parcel of an audit and is it...
