- Joint Committee On Health: General Scheme of the Mental Health (Amendment) Bill 2021: Mental Health Commission (16 Nov 2021)
Martin Conway: Okay. The legislation, hopefully, will go a long way towards dealing with the legacy issues. I have no doubt that, as we move forward, the legislation will probably require amendment. Unfortunately, that is the nature of it. I thank the representatives for their engagement, the work they have done and their accessibility to the committee. The report the commission launched yesterday was...
- Seanad Committee on the Withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union: Northern Ireland Protocol and Ongoing Implementation of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement and the Withdrawal Agreement: Engagement with Mr. Maroš Šefovi (15 Nov 2021)
Martin Conway: I thank the Commissioner for his time. It is an excellent engagement this morning and I thank him for all he is doing on behalf of our community. I have a couple of quick questions. Listening to the engagement, has the British Government brought anything positive to the table? Outside of the change in mood in the last couple of weeks, which is extremely welcome, it appears to me that the...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (11 Nov 2021)
Martin Conway: As people might be aware, next Sunday, 14 November, is International Diabetes Day. We have come a long way in this country in terms of supporting and providing treatment and so on for people with diabetes. Unfortunately, that is not the case in the mid-west. The diabetes unit in the mid-west hospital is grossly inadequate to support the needs of people with diabetes in Limerick. There are...
- Seanad: Science Week: Statements (11 Nov 2021)
Martin Conway: It is appropriate that Senator Boylan is chairing this debate, given her commitment in life to science and the education of young people in that respect. I welcome the Minister of State to the House. I heard some of what the Minister, Deputy Harris, said. I am glad that science is a key commitment of their Department, given that it is extremely important. Recently, we have witnessed how...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Delays in Accessing Scoliosis Treatment and Surgery: Discussion (11 Nov 2021)
Martin Conway: I was following the proceedings from my office, but I like to come into the room for direct discussion. In reply to one of my colleagues, Mr. Green stated that he and his colleagues tried to advance plans during the Covid lockdown when prices were cheaper. What blockages were faced back then? Where were the blockages? Why was it not possible to advance the plans?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Delays in Accessing Scoliosis Treatment and Surgery: Discussion (11 Nov 2021)
Martin Conway: I accept that. Another interesting observation Mr. Green made which is very telling relates to the amount of his time that is taken up with advising and engaging with families, and that it is having an impact on the mental health of some of his colleagues. What type of supports are needed but lacking in that regard?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Delays in Accessing Scoliosis Treatment and Surgery: Discussion (11 Nov 2021)
Martin Conway: That is good.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Delays in Accessing Scoliosis Treatment and Surgery: Discussion (11 Nov 2021)
Martin Conway: I want to highlight the comments Mr. Green made earlier about us having the best clinicians in the world and the best expertise in this country, which is correct. I do a huge amount of work with the eye care teams, particularly in the Mater hospital, including a lot of advocacy work. In the whole area of eye care, we are the best in the world, and we are the best in the world in a whole...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Delays in Accessing Scoliosis Treatment and Surgery: Discussion (11 Nov 2021)
Martin Conway: It is unethical, I would suggest.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Delays in Accessing Scoliosis Treatment and Surgery: Discussion (11 Nov 2021)
Martin Conway: It is crazy.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Delays in Accessing Scoliosis Treatment and Surgery: Discussion (11 Nov 2021)
Martin Conway: Perhaps this committee could do a body of work on that.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Delays in Accessing Scoliosis Treatment and Surgery: Discussion (11 Nov 2021)
Martin Conway: I thank the witnesses for their time.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (10 Nov 2021)
Martin Conway: I, too, would like to be associated with the tributes to Austin Currie. He is a huge loss to his wife, Annita, to our friend and colleague, Senator Emer Currie, and to her siblings. Austin Currie is also a huge loss to the island of Ireland. We saw and know what he did when he was a Minister of State and representative of Dublin West. He worked tirelessly for the people south of the...
- Seanad: Planning and Development (Amendment) (Large-scale Residential Development) Bill 2021: Second Stage (10 Nov 2021)
Martin Conway: The Minister is always welcome to the House. It is good to see him back here. We spent many days in this House between 2011 and 2016. It was productive and we all learned a lot. The SHD process is much maligned and, to a large extent, rightly so, but it was brought in with good intentions. At the time, the advice given to the Minister was that the structure with local authorities and An...
- Seanad: Safe Access to Termination of Pregnancy Services Bill 2021: Second Stage (10 Nov 2021)
Martin Conway: I, too, welcome the Minister. I also acknowledge his constant availability and engagement with us. It is only fair that I commend Sinn Féin colleagues on tabling the Bill. They have put this issue on our agenda. All of us are shocked at the carry-on around hospitals. Let us remember that 68% of the population voted to repeal the eighth amendment three years ago.Termination of...
- Seanad: Safe Access to Termination of Pregnancy Services Bill 2021: Second Stage (10 Nov 2021)
Martin Conway: That is a totally unacceptable comment. It is disgraceful.
- Seanad: Safe Access to Termination of Pregnancy Services Bill 2021: Second Stage (10 Nov 2021)
Martin Conway: They are praying in women’s faces.
- Seanad: Safe Access to Termination of Pregnancy Services Bill 2021: Second Stage (10 Nov 2021)
Martin Conway: There is a big difference, in fairness-----

Martin Conway: You need to be interrupted.
