Seanad: Order of Business (25 Apr 2012)

Caít Keane: Thank you, a Leas-Chathaoirligh. I would be delighted. I note the condemnation of the Government's provision of information on the referendum. The previous referendum failed. A survey conducted on that referendum and surveys conducted on referendums in England demonstrate the strength of the old adage, "If you don't know, vote "No"'. We must ensure that people are informed. At a...

Seanad: Report of Tribunal of Inquiry into Certain Planning Matters and Payments: Statements (24 Apr 2012)

Caít Keane: I welcome the Minister of State to the House to discuss this important report of the Tribunal of Inquiry into Certain Planning Matters and Payments. It is important this House provides the necessary time to consider a report of such profound significance for the fundamentals of politics, planning and public life in Ireland. The publication of the report last month has brought to finality a...

Seanad: Order of Business (24 Apr 2012)

Caít Keane: Regarding water charges, if we go back far enough to the EU water framework directive and subsequent legislation we can see it is not a Labour Party or Fine Gael development. As Senator Bacik said, every country in Europe pays for water and it is not because everybody wants to but for quality and sustainability of water supply. Will the Leader ask the Taoiseach and the Minister for Finance...

Seanad: Order of Business (24 Apr 2012)

Caít Keane: Some of these officials are still occupying top posts in the Department. Are they still erasing what they think a Taoiseach should not hear? The scandal of this cover-up in the Department of Finance is documented in a full file compiled by Ms Mackle which she had intended-----

Seanad: Order of Business (24 Apr 2012)

Caít Keane: I withdraw the name.

Seanad: Order of Business (24 Apr 2012)

Caít Keane: A senior-ranking person in the Department of Finance was charged with the responsibility of giving advice to the Taoiseach and answering parliamentary questions. I want to put it on the record that this person did not release any information or file into the public domain. Somehow, however, it got out there which warrants another investigation. While it is good it got out there, her...

Seanad: Order of Business (24 Apr 2012)

Caít Keane: I am asking for a debate on it. I want the Minister to come into the House after, not before, investigating the matter to give us some answers as to why this happened and if it is still happening. It came from a woman who was serious and, had her predictions been listened to, it would have saved this country. There was another woman on the Anglo Irish Bank board.

Seanad: Order of Business (24 Apr 2012)

Caít Keane: She did the same thing and was thrown off the board or forced to resign. I am asking for a debate on this serious question.

Seanad: Death of Former Member: Expressions of Sympathy (19 Apr 2012)

Caít Keane: As a newcomer to the Seanad I would like to be associated with the remarks made about the late Myles Staunton. I met him and Marianne some years ago and admired him from a distance because of the work he did in the local community, politics and local development. As someone who is married to a Mayo man, I would never be forgiven if I let this great occasion pass and did not pay tribute to a...

Seanad: Order of Business (29 Mar 2012)

Caít Keane: As Senator Bacik said, the Garda Representative Association has described as astonishing the fact that Martin McDermott was transferred to Loughan House, an open prison, having had 91 previous convictions. The Minister has said it was a mistake and that measures would be put in place to ensure such a occurrence was not repeated. He was convicted for the manslaughter of a garda. We expect...
