Seanad: Social Welfare Bill 2007: Second Stage (18 Dec 2007)

Nicky McFadden: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Order of Business (18 Dec 2007)

Nicky McFadden: I wish to raise the issue of the worsening health service in the midlands and ask the Leader to request that the Minister for Health and Children, Deputy Harney, would return to the House to debate the health services for the midlands and the provision of a centre of excellence, a new primary care unit, which has been promised for ten years for Athlone, and on the desperate news of the...

Seanad: Order of Business (18 Dec 2007)

Nicky McFadden: Is this relevant?

Seanad: Order of Business (18 Dec 2007)

Nicky McFadden: What about the health service?

Seanad: Order of Business (13 Dec 2007)

Nicky McFadden: That really puts my contribution in the ha'penny place. Will the Leader ask the Minister for Health and Children to come in here and talk to us about the inclusion of illnesses such as lupins, asthma and hypertension in the long-term illness scheme? What is the difference between diabetes and hypertension when it comes to paying bills? The drugs payment scheme has increased. A person I...

Seanad: Schools Building Projects (12 Dec 2007)

Nicky McFadden: I thank the Minister of State for attending the House. My concerns are based on building projects under the aegis of the Department of Education and Science, and particularly Athlone Community College. Those concerned with this fine school — including its pupils, parents, the CEO and committee of Westmeath VEC, the board of management and staff — are seeking clarification on a starting...

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Dec 2007)

Nicky McFadden: I acknowledge your consideration of my Adjournment matter, a Chathaoirligh, and accept your decision. However, I am increasingly concerned as to who is responsible for transport, which was the subject of my Adjournment matter. Who is responsible for health?

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Dec 2007)

Nicky McFadden: That is all right.

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Dec 2007)

Nicky McFadden: The Minister for Transport should attend the House for a debate on the reopening of Killucan railway station with a park and ride facility, as well as the Mullingar-Athlone rail link, which is a pressing matter. I have raised the latter issue before now.

Seanad: Merits of Farmers' Markets: Statements (6 Dec 2007)

Nicky McFadden: In my contribution I asked the Minister to deal with the regulation of markets. I urge him to expedite that.

Seanad: Merits of Farmers' Markets: Statements (6 Dec 2007)

Nicky McFadden: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Sargent. This is my first opportunity to applaud him on his initiatives and the promotion of farmers' markets. I wish to concentrate on three issues. The first is what the Minister of State has referred to as the local food concept, the second is regulation and the third is food labelling. We have an excellent organic market in Athlone. People do...

Seanad: Merits of Farmers' Markets: Statements (6 Dec 2007)

Nicky McFadden: Never.

Seanad: Merits of Farmers' Markets: Statements (6 Dec 2007)

Nicky McFadden: Yes, of course.

Seanad: Order of Business (6 Dec 2007)

Nicky McFadden: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Order of Business (6 Dec 2007)

Nicky McFadden: I wish to raise the primary care unit in Athlone. I am disgusted and disappointed with the procrastination of the Minister for Health and Children and the HSE. This project was first mooted in the 1990s. A site was purchased in 2002 for €1.2 million and in 2006 a capital allocation of €13.7 million was made. However, there is still no primary care centre. The proposal was to progress...

Seanad: Death of Former Member: Expressions of Sympathy (4 Dec 2007)

Nicky McFadden: I speak on behalf of the Fine Gael Party in Longford-Westmeath and on behalf of my family. My father knew Seán Keegan well. I extend my condolences and sincere sympathy to his wife, Mary, and children, Gearóid, Tom, Nan, Maria and Nuala. Sadly, I did not know Seán, but I understand he always put the people of Westmeath firmly ahead of party politics. He was concerned always with what...

Seanad: Overseas Missions: Statements (Resumed) (29 Nov 2007)

Nicky McFadden: I thank Senator Fitzgerald for sharing her time. I listened with interest to the Minister of State's speech and I thank him for attending the House to address this important issue. I do not wish to repeat the important points other speakers have made, but I have the greatest confidence in the members of our Defence Forces who are highly trained and motivated. If given the necessary...

Seanad: Order of Business (29 Nov 2007)

Nicky McFadden: Will the Leader to convey my gratitude to the Minister for Education and Science, Deputy Mary Hanafin, for the time she spent here last week? I concur with Senator Keaveney on the value of asking questions. I asked two questions of the Minister because my time was restricted to four minutes. One related to Killucan national school, which the Leader knows very well.

Seanad: Order of Business (29 Nov 2007)

Nicky McFadden: I support the Leader in that. The other school is Athlone Community College, also dear to the Leader's heart, and part of the VEC. Plans have been drawn up but there is no start date. I asked the Minister about these matters and she agreed to reply but I have heard nothing yet. I support Senator Fitzgerald regarding women overcoming violence. The Minister should attend a full debate here...
