Ivor Callely: Those involved in the process are genuinely trying to resolve some of the difficult issues presented by a capital city, enjoying such an economic boom as has Dublin for a number of years, and accounting for people with disposable incomes who have second and third cars at a time when the infrastructure between the canals has not changed. This has given rise to a problem. While it should be...

- Seanad: National Car Testing Service: Motion. (3 Nov 2004)
Ivor Callely: I apologise. I thought his point was that the accident record bore no relationship to the age of vehicles. That is not the information I have available. As regards the question of service and fail and the fact that the recheck should be free, I understand that less than 50% of all retests are charged. That means over 50% are free.
- Seanad: National Car Testing Service: Motion. (3 Nov 2004)
Ivor Callely: I am not going to respond to every individual point made, so I ask Senators to be mature and responsible about this debate and not cherrypick. People may decide to continue to return to a test centre to discover every problem their cars have, but there is a system in place. If no work involved, it is free and if there is work involved, a charge applies. The last report was published in 2001...

Ivor Callely: I propose to take Questions Nos. 126, 132, 144, 163 and 178 together. I am deferring any decision about supercube trucks and vehicle height in general until I have had the opportunity to consider the views of all parties with interests or concerns in the matter. To assist me in this process I will shortly publish a consultative paper that will outline the main issues and that will invite...

Ivor Callely: On behalf of the State, NCTS carries out periodic roadworthiness tests on passenger cars that are four or more years old in accordance with Directive 96/96/EC. - Heavy Goods Vehicles. (2 Nov 2004)
Ivor Callely: Supercubes and other similar height vehicles can, in comparison to lower vehicles, present additional challenges, particularly with regard to road safety, rail safety and environmental damage. However, they differ essentially from road haulage vehicles in general only by reason of their greater than usual height. This difference gives rise to concerns that the use of such vehicles, combined...
- Heavy Goods Vehicles. (2 Nov 2004)
Ivor Callely: Deputy Crowe posed a huge number of questions and, in view of the time constraints, I will not be able to answer all of them. He asked about the number of trucks currently operational in the haulage fleet.
