Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Role of Media and Communications in Actioning Climate Change: Discussion (29 Nov 2022)

Brian Leddin: I will make a few observations myself as no other members are indicating. I spent the past few weeks reading submissions on proposed active travel projects in my home city. There are hundreds of them. I draw the attention of the witnesses to them because Limerick's local authority is actually out in front in proposing some really good schemes. However, once the public starts getting...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Role of Media and Communications in Actioning Climate Change: Discussion (29 Nov 2022)

Brian Leddin: I thank Professor Walker for that advice. He mentioned trialling solutions. I understand that the UK has experimental traffic orders. How effective is it to trial something for three months or six months in trying to go from the 85% against to the 85% in favour? Is legislation on trailing the way to do it?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Role of Media and Communications in Actioning Climate Change: Discussion (29 Nov 2022)

Brian Leddin: I am aware of projects anecdotally. During the Covid pandemic we saw many active travel projects. There was a large outcry about one in Limerick, but it was put in because it was the right thing to do and now nobody talks about it; it is just there and hopefully it will be there forever. There seems to be significant opportunity if we can develop trialling systems and legislation.

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (24 Nov 2022)

Brian Leddin: In advance of the changeover in a few weeks' time, I want to raise the issue of the lack of and deficit in health services and infrastructure in the mid-west region. I believe the Tánaiste is aware of this. There is a huge demographic challenge as we look to five, ten and 15 years ahead. We have challenges at the moment but as we go forward to the end of the decade and into the next...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Climate Change Negotiations (22 Nov 2022)

Brian Leddin: I welcome the comments about the Minister, Deputy Ryan. I share the view, and I am sure it is shared across both Houses, of the Minister's influence on this key subject. History will show that this was a turning point. COP26 and COP27 are a turning point in how we address the damage being caused to countries that have not caused this problem. We have caused the problem, in the West in...

They are a credit to the Minister and Minister of State, to the Department, the Oireachtas, the country and the EU. They have shown the power of small countries as well. The influence this country has on the...
