Seanad: Order of Business. (23 Mar 2005)

Shane Ross: I agree with Senator Morrissey and thank Senator Brian Hayes for raising this issue. We should discuss the system if the gardaí are concerned about the imposition of penalty points. I was one of those who wholeheartedly welcomed the imposition of penalty points on the basis that they save lives. It cannot be argued that we oppose penalty points if this is the case. However, there is much...

Seanad: Order of Business. (23 Mar 2005)

Shane Ross: ——was another €80 speeding fine received in exactly the same place. I collected four penalty points——

Seanad: Order of Business. (23 Mar 2005)

Shane Ross: ——over two days, which I have no quarrel with beyond it costing me €160. However, it is important that the gardaí impose these fines with a certain amount of flexibility and that the cameras put into these areas can be changed, as the speed limits in some places defy logic. Not in my case, though. I was wrong and am one of the worst drivers in the House by far.

Seanad: Order of Business. (23 Mar 2005)

Shane Ross: This is very disorderly.

Seanad: Order of Business. (23 Mar 2005)

Shane Ross: Penalty points may not be an appropriate issue for the House today. On another topic, the Senators who spoke about the serious developments with regard to the breach in the Stability and Growth Pact in Europe deserve to be heard. There must be a hearing because, as Senator Dardis said, Ireland received a serious ticking off for breaching the rules. Why should we put up with the bullying...

Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Mar 2005)

Shane Ross: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Mar 2005)

Shane Ross: I welcome Senator Mooney's comments. He has broken the silence on the Government benches regarding the unfortunate plight of the 19 year old Nigerian boy. It is important that a message goes out from the House that this is a humanitarian issue. The Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform can throw rules and bureaucracy at us in respect of this matter from whatever angle he chooses....

Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Mar 2005)

Shane Ross: Costs must now be cut due to international and global pressures on the banks but the people paying the price are never at the top, as Senator Mansergh rightly said. Two groups will pay the price for the mismanagement and exploitation by the banks over the years. One comprises their hard-working and loyal employees who were taken on board as a result of the banks developing a slush fund,...

Seanad: Order of Business. (10 Mar 2005)

Shane Ross: I would not dream of doing so. There are two important reasons for Willie Walsh's departure from Aer Lingus and the Minister for Transport should come before the House to discuss the matter. The first of these is the semi-State culture. Mr. Walsh could not work within this culture because it was not enterprising enough and, unfortunately, he left as a result for an equivalent but larger...

Seanad: Order of Business. (10 Mar 2005)

Shane Ross: Would the multinationals invest in Aer Lingus if the Labour Party's friends in the trade unions decided who was on the board and who would be chief executive?

Seanad: Order of Business. (10 Mar 2005)

Shane Ross: Unions?

Seanad: Order of Business. (10 Mar 2005)

Shane Ross: For the second day in a row, I was struck by something Senator Ryan said. However, I am not quite as in agreement with him today as was the case yesterday. His comments about the activities of multinationals should be taken on board. For the Labour Party to be the voice of multinationals in the House is a new experience for everyone.

Seanad: Order of Business. (10 Mar 2005)

Shane Ross: It is a point well taken. We should consider what multinationals think about a matter Senator Coghlan raised, namely, the fact that the chief executive of Aer Lingus has left these shores because he did not find the conditions in which he worked particularly welcoming or suitable for the enterprise culture.

Seanad: Order of Business. (10 Mar 2005)

Shane Ross: The individual in question took his decision for two reasons of which Senator Ryan should take note.

Seanad: Order of Business. (10 Mar 2005)

Shane Ross: I was merely bringing it to the Senator's attention.

Seanad: Order of Business. (10 Mar 2005)

Shane Ross: I am sure Senator White will have the opportunity to address the House about Colombia on a suitable occasion.

Seanad: Order of Business. (9 Mar 2005)

Shane Ross: I do not know why we cannot try these people for war crimes. Perhaps the Leader can shed some light on this issue. They claim to be fighting a war, have indulged themselves in ethnic cleansing, are taking on the State and are taking the law into their hands to murder people at will. They also look for prisoner of war status and it seems there is a good case for referring such people to the...

Seanad: Order of Business. (3 Mar 2005)

Shane Ross: I support the remarks of Senators Norris and Finucane on the issue of Intel and multinationals. It is appropriate that we have an early debate on what has happened there. Too often the House decides to have debates on matters which are irrelevant by the time we come to discuss them. We may generally be running riot with EU rules and I am not sure whether that is good or bad. Intel is not the...

Seanad: Nursing Home Charges: Statements. (23 Feb 2005)

Shane Ross: This is a political nightmare. We require the impossible, namely, reasonable and mature debate. The situation is ready-made for an irresponsible Opposition, because a mistake has been made by a Government and the person left holding the parcel when the music stops gets the blame which explodes in her face. It is wrong that the Government should suffer the kind of political attacks it has...

Seanad: Nursing Home Charges: Statements. (23 Feb 2005)

Shane Ross: I want to make this point quickly so the Minister of State might address it.
