Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: ECOFIN Meeting: Minister for Finance (6 Jul 2017)

Pearse Doherty: Was it of senior bondholders?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: ECOFIN Meeting: Minister for Finance (6 Jul 2017)

Pearse Doherty: That is the point I am making. There were bail-ins of junior bondholders in other areas but the significance of the new model was that senior bondholders were bailed in before there would be any call on funds. That is the point about Italy. I am sorry to split hairs.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: ECOFIN Meeting: Minister for Finance (6 Jul 2017)

Pearse Doherty: It was a major blow to the process and serious questions need to be asked about the Commission's decision to allow it to happen. There is either a new model or there is not. If this were to happen in Ireland or Luxembourg next, there would be an expectation in the markets that rather than applying the new "suck it up, folks" model that is supposed to involve the bail-in of junior and senior...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: ECOFIN Meeting: Minister for Finance (6 Jul 2017)

Early Childhood Care and Education: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (5 Jul 2017)

Pearse Doherty: Tá mé fíor-bhuíoch den Teachta Kathleen Funchion as ucht an rún seo a chur os comhair na Dála anocht. Níl dabht ar bith gur cheist fíor-thábhachtach é do leanaí agus do dhaoine óga, ach go háirithe dóibh siúd atá ag obair san earnáil seo. Ba mhaith liom an deis a ghlacadh le moladh a thabhairt do mo...

Other Questions: Tax Code (5 Jul 2017)

Pearse Doherty: We argued for it.

Other Questions: Tax Code (5 Jul 2017)

Pearse Doherty: The Minister needs to open his eyes and look at what is happening. Let us look at what the Central Statistics Office, CSO, stated. It stated non-household buyers were outstripping new homeowners in purchases of new houses in Dublin. Who makes up the largest component of non-household buyers? The answer is REITs qualified investor funds. Some 62% of new homes in Dublin were bought by...

Pearse Doherty: The Minister is creating them. His party is-----

Other Questions: Tax Code (5 Jul 2017)

Pearse Doherty: The Minister should answer the questions asked.

Other Questions: Tax Code (5 Jul 2017)

Pearse Doherty: The dividend withholding tax applies to IREFs.

Other Questions: Tax Code (5 Jul 2017)

Pearse Doherty: I am taking this question on behalf of Deputy Tóibín. If an individual or company resident or non-resident makes a gain on the disposal of Irish property, it is standard practice for them to pay capital gains tax at 33%. If an individual resident or non-resident has Irish rental income, they pay Irish personal tax. Likewise, companies, both resident and non-resident, pay...

Ceisteanna - Questions (Resumed) - Priority Questions: Universal Social Charge (5 Jul 2017)

Pearse Doherty: I welcome the fact the penny seems to be finally dropping in Government Buildings and the parliamentary party meetings of Fine Gael, and of Fianna Fáil as it made a very similar promise as it wanted to abolish 90% of the USC. Fine Gael wanted to go the full hog and abolish 100%, which would erode more than €4 billion of our tax base. By 2021, with no policy changes, this tax...

Ceisteanna - Questions (Resumed) - Priority Questions: Universal Social Charge (5 Jul 2017)

Pearse Doherty: Of course I do, and I appreciate the Minister pointing it out.

Ceisteanna - Questions (Resumed) - Priority Questions: Universal Social Charge (5 Jul 2017)

Pearse Doherty: The Minister stands there and says I have no track record or the right because of my track record to make these points. Let me be clear, there was a discussion earlier on the help-to-buy scheme. It needs to be abolished, and in my view it will be abolished, because it is a reckless policy which the Government introduced.

Ceisteanna - Questions (Resumed) - Priority Questions: Universal Social Charge (5 Jul 2017)

Pearse Doherty: Fianna Fáil and Deputy Michael McGrath sat on their hands and allowed it to be introduced at a time when we knew what would happen. I said at a meeting of the finance committee it would partly result in double-digit increases in house prices. All the people out there worth their salt are pointing out it was a reckless decision.

Ceisteanna - Questions (Resumed) - Priority Questions: Universal Social Charge (5 Jul 2017)

Pearse Doherty: Excuse me, Chair, this is a follow-up question and I have my time.
