Sports Facilities. (6 Jul 2006)

Trevor Sargent: It is a sport.

Sports Facilities. (6 Jul 2006)

Trevor Sargent: Skateboarding is competitive.

Disposal of Shares in Aer Lingus Group plc: Motion. (6 Jul 2006)

Trevor Sargent: The Green Party has already stated its position on the privatisation of Aer Lingus. We believe the Government should invest in the company as a vital national asset. This would be in the best interests of the airline, the workers and the economy. Aer Lingus has proved that a publicly owned company can be both profitable and innovative. The Government should consider this before selling off an...

Disposal of Shares in Aer Lingus Group plc: Motion. (6 Jul 2006)

Trevor Sargent: The Minister should know that all public transport is subsidised. I urge the Government to pay heed to the current conditions and to re-examine the retention of Aer Lingus as a strategic asset. If the Government is to close Aer Lingus, I urge it not to jeopardise its prospect further for its own political purposes and to be honest about the amount of control over Ireland's economic well-being...

Order of Business. (6 Jul 2006)

Trevor Sargent: I join Deputies Kenny and McManus in wishing you a good restful summer holiday. As you have advised us many times with your medical hat on, it is important to take a break. I am not sure whether you would recommend such a long break for health reasons. However, I appreciate that is not your choice but maybe the Government had its own reasons for wanting a long break. I thank the staff and...

Order of Business. (6 Jul 2006)

Trevor Sargent: By contrast the Green Party would wish to nominate a Member to the committee but is being denied that opportunity. I ask that the terms of reference for this joint committee on child protection represent the political diversity in the Chamber to the greatest extent possible, given that we are dealing with an issue that is pertinent to the Constitution, which is the people's Constitution and...

Order of Business. (6 Jul 2006)

Trevor Sargent: This committee is comparable to the All-Party Committee on the Constitution. It is unacceptable to exclude smaller parties.

Order of Business. (6 Jul 2006)

Trevor Sargent: This matter was not put before the people at the last election. It is a matter of great significance to my constituents and to other Deputies. The decision needs to be based on a wider mandate than the one claimed by the Government as it stealthily proceeds along its proposed path. I ask that we postpone this motion to allow for wider and longer term consultations. The future of Aer Lingus...

Order of Business. (6 Jul 2006)

Trevor Sargent: ——as an island nation, depends on the viability of the company. I urge the Ceann Comhairle to take that into account.

Order of Business. (6 Jul 2006)

Trevor Sargent: It goes beyond that, it affects the whole country.

Order of Business. (6 Jul 2006)

Trevor Sargent: The Government should acknowledge the widely held view that with the House rising today until 27 September the Government wishes to insulate itself from scrutiny and accountability. Dáil Éireann is where accountability takes place. We support the motion, although we would prefer that the House return on 5 September. Even that date is out of line with other parliaments. We would prefer to...

Order of Business. (6 Jul 2006)

Trevor Sargent: Will the Minister for Finance accede on behalf of the Government to extend the time we have today so the Sullivan report can be discussed and we can broaden the terms of reference of the committee, as is necessary, to include the Sullivan report? There is too much déjÀ vu from beef tribunal days in the way matters are dealt with here. I also ask that we consider membership of the committee....

Order of Business. (6 Jul 2006)

Trevor Sargent: We are indeed.

Order of Business. (6 Jul 2006)

Trevor Sargent: I am explaining why we need a later sitting. At present, not all parties are to be represented on the committee which will deal with a constitutional matter.

Order of Business. (6 Jul 2006)

Trevor Sargent: It is the people's Constitution, not that of a couple of larger parties.

Order of Business. (6 Jul 2006)

Trevor Sargent: It is not agreed.

National Wage Agreement: Statements. (5 Jul 2006)

Trevor Sargent: On behalf of the Green Party, Comhaontas Glas, I acknowledge the hard work of all those who worked to bring about this agreement, Towards 2016. Much of the agreement, especially the social provisions, is aspirational. Commitments need to be more concrete. Other aspects of the agreement are simply a rehash of existing policies. Many commitments are belated. I would be interested to hear why it...

Order of Business (Resumed). (5 Jul 2006)

Trevor Sargent: Are the statements intended to be part of a commitment in the agreement to engage with the political process? A line in the agreement states that the parties involved will meet with the political process. Does this refer to the parties in opposition as well as those in government? Are these statements an enactment of that proposal or is there another dimension to it and do these statements...

Order of Business (Resumed). (5 Jul 2006)

Trevor Sargent: This Bill is rushed to the point of being reckless. Given the subject matter and the small number of individuals who will be affected directly by the legislation, I do not understand why it must take precedence over other urgent legislation and why it must be rushed before the recess. I have not been given reasons for doing so that stand up. I therefore object to it being rushed tonight.

Order of Business (Resumed). (5 Jul 2006)

Trevor Sargent: Will the Taoiseach consider, on tomorrow's Order of Business, allowing the Dáil to sit a further week so the Sullivan report and other important matters can be dealt with? Yesterday I asked the Taoiseach what would be the title of the legislation to implement the recommendations of the Kenny report. Does he have a name for the Bill? Will it be called the price of land suitable for building...
