Committee of Inquiry into the Banking Crisis: Context Phase (18 Feb 2015)

Kieran O'Donnell: Let me put it another way, Professor Honohan said allowing Anglo Irish Bank to fail should have been considered in the context of discussions with Europe and it would have effectively been delayed for a week, in terms of ELF funding being provided to Anglo Irish Bank. My question is whether Dr. Donovan believes on the night of the guarantee it would have been reasonable that the authorities...

Road Traffic (Amendment) Bill 2015: Second Stage [Private Members] (17 Feb 2015)

Kieran O'Donnell: I am glad to contribute to the debate and I commend Deputy Ellis for introducing the legislation. I met Roseann Brennan for the first time earlier. I commend the fantastic work she has done and, like everyone else, I would like to express my sympathy on the loss of Jake. As a parent, I can think of nothing worse. I have spoken at length to the Minister about this issue previously in the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) Aer Lingus and Stobart Air (17 Feb 2015)

Kieran O'Donnell: We are looking after the taxpayers’ interests, namely, the 25.1% shareholding in the airline, as well as national and regional strategic interests. What was the basis for the €2.55 share price? When one looks at the market value of the assets, it strikes me as higher than the €1.36 billion price offer. What are Aer Lingus’s plans for its Heathrow and...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) Aer Lingus and Stobart Air (17 Feb 2015)

Kieran O'Donnell: This is a point. Aer Lingus has €400 million net cash on its balance sheet at the minute. Based on what we are hearing, the slots are worth at least €400 million plus, and could be worth a lot more. The planes, we are hearing, are worth roughly €650 million. That is approximately €1.45 million. I also suspect the company has a significant property portfolio....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) Aer Lingus and Stobart Air (17 Feb 2015)

Kieran O'Donnell: Are the figures I have just quoted correct or incorrect?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) Aer Lingus and Stobart Air (17 Feb 2015)

Kieran O'Donnell: What would Mr. Kavanagh anticipate the slots are worth? In terms of what we are reading in the media, €400 million appears to be the valuation. What does the witness think the 23 slots are worth?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) Aer Lingus and Stobart Air (17 Feb 2015)

Kieran O'Donnell: There must have been a value put on the slots. Are they being valued at significantly less than €400 million?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) Aer Lingus and Stobart Air (17 Feb 2015)

Kieran O'Donnell: And the 600----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) Aer Lingus and Stobart Air (17 Feb 2015)

Kieran O'Donnell: IAG has also come out and said it will result in job losses. In terms of the employees, we are also looking at that in terms of our fiduciary duties as----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) Aer Lingus and Stobart Air (17 Feb 2015)

Kieran O'Donnell: Chairman, there were other questions I had asked.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) Aer Lingus and Stobart Air (17 Feb 2015)

Kieran O'Donnell: There are similar questions there as well.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) Aer Lingus and Stobart Air (17 Feb 2015)

Kieran O'Donnell: I do not want a debate, but I asked about the plans for Shannon both in terms of Heathrow and transatlantic routes, and also for a comment on the fact that we are reading reports that under competition rules, the likelihood is that Aer Lingus will be required to sell some of the slots it already has on the Dublin to Heathrow route. That would result in a loss of the slots to Ireland Inc.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) Aer Lingus and Stobart Air (17 Feb 2015)

Kieran O'Donnell: Given the facts that Dublin Airport is under pressure in terms of pre-clearance facilities and that Shannon Airport has extra capacity, do the delegates not view this as providing opportunities?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) Aer Lingus and Stobart Air (17 Feb 2015)

Kieran O'Donnell: My final point is on competition and the slots.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) Aer Lingus and Stobart Air (17 Feb 2015)

Kieran O'Donnell: I will finish on this point.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) Aer Lingus and Stobart Air (17 Feb 2015)

Kieran O'Donnell: Would Mr. Kavanagh worry about losing slots?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) IAG (12 Feb 2015)

Kieran O'Donnell: I thank Mr. Walsh and his colleague. Mr. Walsh has been CEO of BA and then IAG for the past ten years. During this time, what changes have there been in the regional airports out of which his airline operated on the north transatlantic routes? What has his model been in the airlines he has taken over, particularly in the UK over the years? Could he tell me the number of regional airports...

Kieran O'Donnell: I meant airlines Mr. Walsh has taken over.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) IAG (12 Feb 2015)

Kieran O'Donnell: I referred to the airlines Mr. Walsh took over in the UK that were flying transatlantic.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) IAG (12 Feb 2015)

Kieran O'Donnell: Were none of the airlines flying transatlantic through any of the regional airports?
