Private Members' Business - Care Services: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (19 Dec 2012)

Jerry Buttimer: I am glad that, for once, the Deputy recognises that we must go to the troika, the EU and the IMF. That is the reality. The Fianna Fáil Party cut €16.50 from core social welfare payments. It baffles me to hear Deputy Martin speak on the Order of Business, given that he sat in Cabinet for 14 years and acquiesced to and supported the McCreevy-Ahern economic model. He was a...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Cystic Fibrosis Unit: Discussion (13 Dec 2012)

Jerry Buttimer: The last thing we need, going back to Senator Crown's point, is to see a repeat of this in January or February.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Cystic Fibrosis Unit: Discussion (13 Dec 2012)

Jerry Buttimer: A vote has been called in Dáil. I thank the staff who do Trojan work, in particular Professor Gallagher for his lead. We are here as Members of the Oireachtas but we must also represent the voice of the patient. We are speaking about people with a need and requirement and I thank the witnesses for coming before the committee this morning. I apologise to those witnesses who did not...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Cystic Fibrosis Unit: Discussion (13 Dec 2012)

Jerry Buttimer: It should be acknowledged that the staff in this unit do tremendous work.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Cystic Fibrosis Unit: Discussion (13 Dec 2012)

Jerry Buttimer: The purpose of our meeting is not to score points and to create division but there was a level of anxiety which came across very palpably on the airwaves and the good news story was diluted. This unit was opened with great fanfare and suddenly there was a problem. I understand the demands and pressure. This meeting has given people confidence and I am reassured by the presentation.

Jerry Buttimer: Have representatives from the hospital met the association since the incident?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Cystic Fibrosis Unit: Discussion (13 Dec 2012)

Jerry Buttimer: In the case of Cork, is the development of the facility there being prioritised and is it ongoing? Where is it on the list? There are a number of them and Professor Gallagher will address them. The association has carried out significant fund raising and has identified the areas in which it will work in partnership with us to help us on the capital build because, as members can appreciate,...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Cystic Fibrosis Unit: Discussion (13 Dec 2012)

Jerry Buttimer: Perhaps Mr. Jermyn would update the committee on the circumstances surrounding admissions to St. Vincent's University Hospital and the action being taken by the management of the hospital in this regard.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Cystic Fibrosis Unit: Discussion (13 Dec 2012)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Cystic Fibrosis Unit: Discussion (13 Dec 2012)

Jerry Buttimer: Arising from our meeting last week, there was a proposal from Senator van Turnhout that we would discuss current practice in relation to the cystic fibrosis unit at St. Vincent's Hospital. I welcome Professor Charles Gallagher, Mr. Gerry O'Dwyer, Mr. Nicholas Jermyn, Ms Martina Queally and Ms Mary Godfrey. Mr. Ray Mitchell from the HSE is also present. I remind members and people in the...

Jerry Buttimer: A copy of the presentation has been circulated to members.

Social Welfare Bill 2012: Second Stage (Resumed) (12 Dec 2012)

Jerry Buttimer: It is important to put the debate in context. When I listen to the largest Opposition party, in particular, it seems as if amnesia has set in. This is the party that took €16.50 a week from the disabled and the blind, those who required the most help from the State. Its members have come here tonight ready to cast their votes, but they have brought forward no propositions. I...

Social Welfare Bill 2012: Second Stage (Resumed) (12 Dec 2012)

Jerry Buttimer: I would be embarrassed. In its last two budgets before it left office Fianna Fáil slashed core weekly payments on which citizens relied. In our case, as a Government, we restored the minimum wage, maintained core weekly payments and have a plan to restore the country's finances. That is why there is positivity regarding the 2,500 places available on the Tús scheme, which will...
