- Seanad: Tax Code: Motion (29 Nov 2006)
Shane Ross: I will give Senator Mansergh something constructive to say if I keep going. We are talking about a tiny amount of money to be saved by a large number of people who badly need houses. Quite honestly, I do not care if this comes about through the abolition of stamp duty, mortgage relief or by injecting that money straight into people's pockets. This is a justifiable cause and a justifiable...
- Seanad: Tax Code: Motion (29 Nov 2006)
Shane Ross: The Senator had to waffle. Every word of what the Senator said was waffle. Not a single word of it was anything but waffle.
- Seanad: Tax Code: Motion (29 Nov 2006)
Shane Ross: Is there a doctor in the House? There are problems other than stamp duty in the housing market. When Senator Mansergh said there was no property capital tax in the housing market he was wrong. Property tax and capital gains tax applies to anybody who owns a second house. Anybody who sells a house on more than one acre has to pay capital gains tax.
- Seanad: Tax Code: Motion (29 Nov 2006)
Shane Ross: The Senator should have said so. It would have been a fact rather than waffle.
- Seanad: Tax Code: Motion (29 Nov 2006)
Shane Ross: When Senator Mansergh does not tell us what he is talking about until afterwards, it is very difficult for us to know to what he is referring.
- Seanad: Tax Code: Motion (29 Nov 2006)
Shane Ross: It is kind of him to interrupt anyway. There are one or two other problems in this market which should be highlighted. The problems of moving are huge for people, not for first-time buyers. If one moves from a â¬1 million house which is not exorbitant any more, one pays auctioneers fees of probably 2%, approximately â¬20,000, and solicitor's fees of â¬10,000. If one moves into an...
- Seanad: Tax Code: Motion (29 Nov 2006)
Shane Ross: That is why the Senator said nothing. There is a very good case for removing the stamp duty or changing it in such a way that there is more mobility in the market.
- Seanad: Order of Business (28 Nov 2006)
Shane Ross: I endorse the remarks made by Senator Brian Hayes and congratulate the Minister of State at the Department of Health and Children, Deputy Brian Lenihan, on his decision to review the location of the planned children's hospital. It is especially courageous of the Minister in question because the location proposed is the Mater Hospital, which is in the Taoiseach's constituency, and it is not...
- Seanad: Order of Business (28 Nov 2006)
Shane Ross: Will the Leader consider asking the Minister of State at the Department of Health and Children, Deputy Brian Lenihan, to attend the House to expand on his very enlightened remarks and suggest a new system involving, at the very least, a hub, which could be the Mater if political imperatives so demand, with spokes around the city at other hospitals accessible to children through the traffic?...
- Seanad: Order of Business (28 Nov 2006)
Shane Ross: Was it just a coincidence that it ended up in the Taoiseach's constituency?
- Seanad: Order of Business (28 Nov 2006)
Shane Ross: Hear, hear. Brilliant.
- Seanad: Order of Business (16 Nov 2006)
Shane Ross: It should happen now.
- Seanad: Order of Business (16 Nov 2006)
Shane Ross: On 20 December, there will be much fanfare and transport triumph when the port tunnel is opened in Dublin. We should debate road infrastructure and traffic congestion in Dublin. When the tunnel is opened, it will only transfer a problem from one area of Dublin to the M50. An extra 9,500 vehicles will be forced to use the motorway every day. The position on infrastructure is chronic. If,...
- Seanad: Waste Management (8 Nov 2006)
Shane Ross: I raise an issue brought to my attention by a company, Leaf Environmental Limited, which has been frustrated in its attempt to get a licence to compete in the waste management sector. There is a general issue to be addressed in this area because Repak has a monopoly. That may not be Repak's fault but it creates a difficulty for consumers in this area, especially small businesses. Leaf's...
- Seanad: Waste Management (8 Nov 2006)
Shane Ross: Will the Minister facilitate this specific application provided it meets with the regulations?
- Seanad: Address by the European Union Ambassador to the United States (8 Nov 2006)
Shane Ross: It will be a change not to have hot air coming out of Drumcondra anyway. I join in the thanks to Ambassador Bruton for coming to the House. He made one of the clearest speeches I have heard from the seat in which he sits. The message was also clear. It was flattering to this House to be read a thesis which was obviously written and understood by its author and I congratulate the...
- Seanad: Order of Business (25 Oct 2006)
Shane Ross: I ask the Leader to set up a sub-committee of the House to deal with advertising, in particular to address the peculiar activities of some Members. I wake up in the mornings and listen to Senator Henry telling me I should have a happy heart, followed by Senator Norris telling me I should buy Tesco products, which are very bad for a happy heart.
- Seanad: Order of Business (25 Oct 2006)
Shane Ross: Then I hear Senator Quinnââ
- Seanad: Order of Business (25 Oct 2006)
Shane Ross: It is a very important issue. If the Cathaoirleach sat beside the Senators in question on the backbenches he would feel rather left out. We are all entitled to a gig of that sort.
- Seanad: Order of Business (25 Oct 2006)
Shane Ross: The Senators will undoubtedly make declarations of interest over such activities. I agree with Senator Norris and others that we must have a debate on salmon drift net fishing.
