- Seanad: Petroleum (Exploration and Extraction) Safety Bill 2010: Second Stage (28 Jan 2010)
Paddy Burke: I welcome the Minister to the House and I wish him well with this Bill. It is very important and some credit for this should go to Shell to Sea and to the Rossport five. They have probably highlighted the safety issues and they have generated the debate. However, credit is also due to the Minister for bringing forward this Bill. I was a member of Mayo County Council when the gas issue...

- Seanad: Petroleum (Exploration and Extraction) Safety Bill 2010: Second Stage (28 Jan 2010)
Paddy Burke: Mayo might be a Fine Gael stronghold now but it certainly was not at that time. This project was never hijacked by any of the main political parties. They never brought politics into it during this dispute. We were delighted the gas find was coming through the county because it carried many benefits from a rates point of view. The pipeline was going 100 miles from north Mayo to the Galway...

I support Senator O'Malley in this regard. I welcome this important legislation and I wish the Minister well. As Senator Donohoe said, Fine Gael will be fully supportive of the Bill.
- Seanad: Order of Business (28 Jan 2010)
Paddy Burke: I ask for a debate on regional planning guidelines as soon as possible. In most regional authorities the regional planning guidelines are on public display. We have seen the flooding fiasco in recent months due to poor planning. This is a golden opportunity for the Seanad to debate something relevant to local authority members and Senators. I ask for this debate because in most cases the...

- Seanad: Banking Sector: Statements (26 Jan 2010)
Paddy Burke: I welcome the Minister of State and I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the debate. I wish the Minister for Finance the best with his illness but I am disappointed he is not present. Senator Donohoe put his finger on it when he said there should be a great deal of straight talking. One wonders about all the fuss over a banking inquiry and how sophisticated it needs to be. I...
