Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Matters Relating to the Banking Sector: Allied Irish Banks (21 Jun 2018)

Rose Conway Walsh: Does Mr. Byrne understand why ordinary workers would not understand why his bank is paying no tax while making billions of euros in profit?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Matters Relating to the Banking Sector: Allied Irish Banks (21 Jun 2018)

Rose Conway Walsh: I know the mechanics of it, I am talking about the morality. People who are struggling to pay their mortgages are paying a huge amount of tax.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Matters Relating to the Banking Sector: Allied Irish Banks (21 Jun 2018)

Rose Conway Walsh: It is a matter of tax fairness and tax justice. That is what Irish people want. In terms of the sales to the vulture funds and the buy-to-lets, what is the average write-down AIB gives when it is selling off packages of loans?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Matters Relating to the Banking Sector: Allied Irish Banks (21 Jun 2018)

Rose Conway Walsh: I will finish with this. I find it very difficult to make sense of the fact that AIB has such a write-down for a bunch of funds that will then flip the portfolio over in the short term, will make huge profits but will pay no tax on it, when a restructuring could possibly be done. My concern is that ultimately, tenants in those properties will be turfed out or their rents will be hiked.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Matters Relating to the Banking Sector: Allied Irish Banks (21 Jun 2018)

Rose Conway Walsh: Would AIB consider somebody just paying interest only as being a performing or a non-performing loan?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Matters Relating to the Banking Sector: Allied Irish Banks (21 Jun 2018)

Rose Conway Walsh: That does not reflect my experience and I will finish with that.

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Jun 2018)

Rose Conway Walsh: I again have to raise the issue of the water supply in the village of Murrisk, which is near Westport, and the surrounding areas. I know I have raised this before. I have submitted several Commencement matters on the issue which have all been refused. It really is a serious problem and it is escalating. Before somebody says that if we had water charges we would have a water supply there,...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Rural and Community Development: Rural Transport Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Jun 2018)

Rose Conway Walsh: I thank the witnesses for their opening statements. I am going to start on school transport because I have been dealing with it for a long time. We have the case of Kate, who has a valid medical card, but her parents were advised that Rebecca is eligible to get a school bus ticket but she cannot be issued with a ticket as there are no seats available on the bus. Kate's siblings currently...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Rural and Community Development: Rural Transport Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Jun 2018)

Rose Conway Walsh: On the issue of bus shelters, what is the process for applying for a bus shelter? To whom can communities apply and what is the timeline?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Rural and Community Development: Rural Transport Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Jun 2018)

Rose Conway Walsh: Has funding been increased this year?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Rural and Community Development: Rural Transport Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Jun 2018)

Rose Conway Walsh: Was it increased last year?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Rural and Community Development: Rural Transport Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Jun 2018)

Rose Conway Walsh: In that case, why are we talking about a greater possibility of securing bus shelters?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Rural and Community Development: Rural Transport Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Jun 2018)

Rose Conway Walsh: I do not welcome that answer because it further marginalises people who are dependent on transport, particularly for a hospital appointment. I asked Mr. Gaston to proceed to the other questions.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Rural and Community Development: Rural Transport Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Jun 2018)

Rose Conway Walsh: I am not talking about concession students but eligible students. Whose responsibility is it to say there is a larger bus available and that it may be used?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Rural and Community Development: Rural Transport Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Jun 2018)

Rose Conway Walsh: I am referring to eligible students in circumstances where the application is late because a student will not know whether he or she will repeat the leaving certificate.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Rural and Community Development: Rural Transport Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Jun 2018)

Rose Conway Walsh: In that case, it is Bus Éireann's responsibility to take it up with the Department and the Department's responsibility to sanction it.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Rural and Community Development: Rural Transport Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Jun 2018)

Rose Conway Walsh: It is not resolved but I hope that after our discussion today, it will be.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Rural and Community Development: Rural Transport Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Jun 2018)

Rose Conway Walsh: Who sets the application times? I refer to the April and July times. Is it the Department or Bus Éireann?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Rural and Community Development: Rural Transport Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Jun 2018)

Rose Conway Walsh: Is Mr. Hernan saying people who repeat the leaving certificate examination or move into an area after the date in April and give details by July do not count?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Rural and Community Development: Rural Transport Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Jun 2018)

Rose Conway Walsh: Bus Éireann is ruling students ineligible because, according to the company, to be eligible school transport applications must be made on the Bus Éireann website prior to 28 April and medical card details must be received by 28 July. Bus Éireann, because of its deadlines, is making the students ineligible even though they are eligible in terms of medical cards. I am sorry but...
