Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Update on Key Issues: Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science (24 Jan 2024)

Aisling Dolan: I thank the Minister. I link in closely with these colleges and universities, as they are in my area. They are already striving ahead in terms of looking at how to expand and build the expertise and staffing required. They are planning to meet what they say is a need. There is a large gap for graduates. How will the Government support that development across the country? We have...

Aisling Dolan: I thank the Minister.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Update on Key Issues: Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science (24 Jan 2024)

Aisling Dolan: My question is about the importance of local transport which the Minister mentioned at the start of his opening statement. In the SUSI scheme, the Minister expanded the radius from 30 km to 45 km or perhaps more. That is crucial for rural areas. How does the Department link in with LocalLink? For example, I am fighting for a bus route between Athlone and Ballinasloe - a LocalLink service...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (23 Jan 2024)

Aisling Dolan: I join Senator Murphy in paying tribute to Tom Hussey. He gave many years of service in many different Departments, including the Departments of agriculture and Health. I wish to acknowledge his family because we all know how much families give when a family member is involved in public service. I am sure the people of Glenamaddy are also of great support. I wish to expand on what Senator...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (22 Jan 2024)

Aisling Dolan: Will there be one everyone in the audience? Senator Norris, it has been an absolute honour to share this Chamber with you. Today, I can only acknowledge the tributes that have been paid to you and add my voice to them. You have left Ireland a better country and there is no better tribute that someone can pay than that. You have done that for the people of Ireland and people who fought...

Seanad: An Bille um an Daicheadú Leasú ar an mBunreacht (Cúram), 2023: An Dara Céim - Fortieth Amendment of the Constitution (Care) Bill 2023: Second Stage (22 Jan 2024)

Aisling Dolan: I wish to share two minutes of my time with Senator Conway.

Seanad: An Bille um an Daicheadú Leasú ar an mBunreacht (Cúram), 2023: An Dara Céim - Fortieth Amendment of the Constitution (Care) Bill 2023: Second Stage (22 Jan 2024)

Aisling Dolan: I thank the Minister for being here today. As my colleague, Senator Seery Kearney said, it is an absolute privilege to be speaking on a constitutional amendment. It is an honour to be able to stand here and have our voice heard on this debate along with so many people across the country. The Irish Constitution, Bunreacht na hÉireann, dates back to 1937. As we all know it covers the...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (14 Dec 2023)

Aisling Dolan: Like my colleagues, I wish the staff in the Seanad Office a happy Christmas, and wish Tom Hickey well in this retirement. I thank my colleagues, including Caroline, Mikayala and my team in Roscommon and Galway, for all their support this year. It has been a difficult year. People are preparing for Christmas. I encourage them to shop local, where they can, when they are buying presents....

Seanad: Appropriation Bill 2023: Second Stage (14 Dec 2023)

Aisling Dolan: I welcome the Minister for public expenditure to the Chamber. This Bill will ensure payments, particularly social welfare payments and I want to comment on the social welfare side. The budget this year provided the largest ever package for social projection. I do not want to underestimate that. People will be able to access increased pension payments and carers will be able to claim back...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Recent Reclassification of Beef Indexes: Discussion (13 Dec 2023)

Aisling Dolan: I thank the Chair for giving me the time to speak and to the Irish Cattle Breeding Federation, which is before us. We are speaking about the impact on suckler farmers and farming families of the recent beef Euro-Star index changes. I will ask Mr. Coughlan a question that relates to his role as chief executive of the organisation. He referred to suboptimal communications. Would he accept...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Recent Reclassification of Beef Indexes: Discussion (13 Dec 2023)

Aisling Dolan: That failure, which Mr. Coughlan has just admitted, has impacted on the livelihoods of farmers and farming families.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Recent Reclassification of Beef Indexes: Discussion (13 Dec 2023)

Aisling Dolan: As Mr. Coughlan said, they amount to 16% of herds. As he mentioned, animals that stay within the herd of course keep their rating. What is the likelihood of that? Many farming families will need to sell cattle on. Once they do that, the star rating changes. Is that correct?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Recent Reclassification of Beef Indexes: Discussion (13 Dec 2023)

Aisling Dolan: I come from a family where we grew up as suckler farmers. We kept cattle for a short time and they went to the mart. If we did not make a sale, it had a huge impact on our family's income as small farmers.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Recent Reclassification of Beef Indexes: Discussion (13 Dec 2023)

Aisling Dolan: I ask Mr. Coughlan again about the impact in the failure in communication on the livelihoods of farmers who now need to sell cattle and go to the mart, with the cattle's star rating having now dropped. They were not aware of that. Does the failure in communication not indicate that it has an impact on the livelihoods of farmers?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Recent Reclassification of Beef Indexes: Discussion (13 Dec 2023)

Aisling Dolan: The ICBF is a large enterprise with close to 80 employees. It has agri-advisers. How many locations does it have across the country?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Recent Reclassification of Beef Indexes: Discussion (13 Dec 2023)

Aisling Dolan: Does the ICBF have any liaison officers who work with farmers?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Recent Reclassification of Beef Indexes: Discussion (13 Dec 2023)

Aisling Dolan: Who does that?
