Committee on Public Petitions: Consideration of Public Petition on Saving the Services of the Owenacurra Centre in Cork: Discussion. (7 Jul 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: .... I thank her for what she is saying to us today because it helps us. We are getting a different side of the story and that is why this meeting is so important for those of us who are not in east Cork. I thank Dr. Kelleher for being here today. I hope she understands that we are trying to work together to ensure her aunt and other service users are looked after and treated properly.

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (7 Jul 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: I believe David Joyce from Cork City Council gave us a very comprehensive reply.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (5 Jul 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: ...I rise today predominantly to ask for the Minister of State with responsibility for disability to come to the House to discuss the lack of a service level agreement between ChildVision and the HSE in CHO 4 in Cork. It is alarming that an organisation such as ChildVision, based on the Model Farm Road in Cork, providing a tremendously important service for children with sight loss and...

Seanad: EirGrid, Electricity and Turf (Amendment) Bill 2022: Second Stage (5 Jul 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: ...that. I will raise the issue of the Barryroe field, which was raised at the annual general meeting of Providence Resources last week. The company may submit an application to drill a new well off the Cork coast. Providence is telling us this could assist with our energy security. I hope the Department will engage with Providence on the Barryroe field. I have no vested interest in this...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (30 Jun 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: ..., as requested by other Senators. This morning, the NTA published, for public consultation, details the preferred route options for the 12 sustainable transport corridors under BusConnects in Cork. The consultation period begins today and will run until 9 September. It is about increasing the bus corridor from 14 km to 93 km. I hope the public consultation process will be wide-ranging...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Road Safety Strategy 2021-30: Discussion (30 Jun 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: ...Deputy made a very positive suggestion about meeting young people immediately after a night out, particularly in areas where they congregate like car parks, etc. It might be different in Dublin or Cork where there is probably no set meeting point but it is important. Deputy Lowry's contribution is something we should come back to as a committee to assist in further discussion on this...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Road Safety Strategy 2021-30: Discussion (30 Jun 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: ..., if I can use that phrase, on the road. I am not against it, as they know, but it just baffles me that I can tell our guests the spots between here, Portlaoise, Abbeyleix, Tipperary, Kilkenny, Cork to Limerick and Tipperary down to Cork.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Road Safety Strategy 2021-30: Discussion (30 Jun 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: To take up Senator Craughwell's point, one could be travelling at 100 km/h before coming to a 60 km/h limit at Lissard in Cork. Is there a thought process around going from 100 km/h in a graded way to 80 km/h and then a speed appropriate to a village like Lissard? It is a fair point.

Seanad: Sick Leave Bill 2022: Committee Stage (29 Jun 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: .... Many of the people we are talking about are employers who are paying far more than the minimum wage. Whether the Senator accepts that or not, it is the reality. I will bring it to many employers in Cork, where I live-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: National Broadband Plan Update: National Broadband Ireland (29 Jun 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: ...The slippage rate in the roll-out is a concern. Some 22% of homes have had connections built. I would like to hear more about NBI's commitment to get involved in deployments out in the field in Cork but also more generally. Our visits to the deployment areas were successful and gave us a great insight into what was required. In terms of selling what NBI is doing, though, the witnesses...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: National Broadband Plan Update: National Broadband Ireland (29 Jun 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: I apologise to Deputy Ó Murchú, but could I just get a piece about Cork off air rather than delay the meeting? If I could, it would be helpful. I apologise to the Deputy.

Seanad: Higher Education Authority Bill 2022: Second Stage (28 Jun 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: ...in a single person, whoever that person may be. By the same token, and I apologise that I cannot find the answer to this, can the Minister answer a question on the composition of the governing body of University College Cork? Are the lord mayor and other councillors still included in that position? I hope that this is not taken away. If they are not included that would present a...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Greater Dublin Area Transport Strategy 2022-2042: National Transport Authority (28 Jun 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: .... I welcome Ms Graham and Mr. Creegan once again. They seem to be permanent fixtures at our committee. They could both take up residence here, no bother at all. They may be surprised that I, a Cork person, am speaking on Dublin but I have a number of points I want to raise on behalf of Councillor Joe Neville, who has engaged extensively with me on the matter, as well as Councillor...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Greater Dublin Area Transport Strategy 2022-2042: National Transport Authority (28 Jun 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: ...representatives, particularly members of the Oireachtas transport committee, to attend it, if that is not too great a request? I appreciate there is to be a virtual meeting and a physical meeting in Cork on Thursday, but it would be unfair to us as members of the committee that there were a launch and we were not invited. That is not a criticism but rather a request.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Greater Dublin Area Transport Strategy 2022-2042: National Transport Authority (28 Jun 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: The Minister for Transport, Deputy Eamon Ryan, attended an event in Cork a couple of weeks ago, however, and no member of the transport committee, as far as I know, was invited. It is just something to think about.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (22 Jun 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: ...dealt with by the Seanad Public Consultation Committee, which had to pause its work due to Covid. In light of the contribution of Senator Clonan yesterday, the work being done by Ciarán Delaney in Cork and elsewhere in Ireland and the contribution of the Ombudsman for Children this morning, I propose that the Seanad set aside time to hold hearings with organisations and people on...

Seanad: Annual Transition Statement: Statements (22 Jun 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: ...his Department and the National Transport Authority on their very positive and ambitious plans - they are not just plans but are becoming realities - for the overhaul of the public transport network in Cork and the commitment of the Minister, on behalf of the Government, to those plans. In the context of Senator McDowell's remarks, that is an example of a Minister in a Government who is...

Seanad: Neurology Nurses: Motion (22 Jun 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: .... To be fair to Senator Boyhan, that is what this motion is about. He is right that it is not political but is about the people. It is the story of Darren and Caoimhe we should focus on. Equally, it is Mr. Declan Greogor in Cork and Mr. Tony Wilkinson of Cork Parkinson's Association we should be talking about in the context of the advocacy and work they have been doing. I referenced...
