Pat Buckley: ...requirement. Any member who attempts to participate from outside the precincts will be asked to leave the meeting. Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Election of Leas-Chathaoirleach (13 Jul 2023)

Pat Buckley: I thank the Deputies. As there are no other nominations, I declare Deputy Éamon Ó Cuív elected Leas-Chathaoirleach. Is that agreed? Agreed. I congratulate Deputy Ó Cuív and will invite him to say a few words when he arrives in the committee room. Would any other members like to comment? No. We have a very subdued committee this morning. I propose we suspend...

Committee on Public Petitions: Closure of Vital Health Services: Discussion (13 Jul 2023)

Pat Buckley: I thank Ms Curtis for attending. This has been going on for a long time. What we have dealt with is only part of the file on Owenacurra. There are also parliamentary questions and you name it, not to mention the petititons. Ms Curtis is right. She mentioned suicides. Between 2000 and 2002, there were 69 suicides in east Cork. There were women aged 63, 54 and 33, and the rest were...

Committee on Public Petitions: Closure of Vital Health Services: Discussion (13 Jul 2023)

Pat Buckley: The point I am making is that Ms Curtis is correct. Somebody has to take responsibility for messing up - I am being polite with the phrase "messing up" - and reverse these decisions, and if something is broken, fix it, and if one cannot fix it, replace it. That is only the structure. One should not remove vital services from the communities because that is where the heartbeat of the...

Committee on Public Petitions: Closure of Vital Health Services: Discussion (13 Jul 2023)

Pat Buckley: I apologise for not being in the committee room but I was watching the meeting and there was some detail covered. That is the way it is. It is not about giving the witnesses a pat on the back. It is about exposing the point that they knew more about what was going on. They did not have fairy-tale ideas. They had solutions and nobody listened to them. That is the reason I am very proud...

Committee on Public Petitions: Closure of Vital Health Services: Discussion (13 Jul 2023)

Pat Buckley: .... I was thoroughly disappointed when she stated that since they were here in January, things have actually got worse. I am conscious that when we talk about the HSE, the staff, the cleaners and cooks and everybody else, we are talking about people who take their jobs to heart, are exemplary. The issue is with the top management. The latter probably have bonkers syndrome because they...

Committee on Public Petitions: Closure of Vital Health Services: Discussion (13 Jul 2023)

Pat Buckley: I reiterate that. Ms Curtis is right that I have approached the Minister of State, Deputy Butler, on numerous occasions, officially and unofficially, and even asked her during the last break or so-called recess, whenever it was, in her capacity as a civilian to go in and look at the place. Unfortunately, that request was declined. Ms Curtis is right about how important this is. Of all...

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (13 Jul 2023)

Pat Buckley: It is 2023. That this place in Kiltimagh does not have a water supply is crazy. On top of that, there is the issue of water charges and how that went, yet these people were willing to pay between €1,500 and €3,000. It is simply not good enough. County council workers are on one-day stoppages at the moment and boil water notices are in place in many counties today. I have...

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (13 Jul 2023)

Pat Buckley: I agree. There is a lot of work in that, given the response runs to more than eight pages. The responses from the Secretary General and the assistant chief executive of Cork City Council seem to be good enough. We will wait and see what the response of the petitioner is. I agree with the recommendation.

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (13 Jul 2023)

Pat Buckley: This is substantial. As I said at a previous meeting, we are not miracle workers. We will go with the recommendations and see what we can do about this. It is a difficult process and it has to follow procedure, so I will agree with the recommendations.

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (13 Jul 2023)

Pat Buckley: I thank the whole committee and all the staff. I say this all the time, but the amount of work, toing and froing, paperwork, questions and attempts to squeeze out answers makes our job an awful lot easier, as does reading the condensed material. I just always want to put that on the record. The staff have been absolutely exemplary.

Investment in Football: Motion [Private Members] (12 Jul 2023)

Pat Buckley: I thank the Labour Party for tabling the motion. Ireland is a sport-mad country. We are absolutely bonkers when it comes to sport. With regard to the FAI report, it is nice it has acknowledged that we need a bottom-up approach. Many people have mentioned women's sports in particular It is right that it is about proper facilities. It is also about being part of a community and...

Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Road Projects (12 Jul 2023)

Pat Buckley: 70. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if his Department can use powers under section 10 of the Roads Act 1993 as amended to reclassify the R624 N25 to Cobh road in east Cork to a national primary or national secondary route, in order that State funding can be used for the upgrade of construction of a new bridge at Belvelly Bridge, Cobh and also carry out improvement works...

Written Answers — Department of Health: Dental Services (11 Jul 2023)

Pat Buckley: 852. To ask the Minister for Health the reason no person has had access to the Orthodontic Dental School and Hospital at Cork University since March 2023; the reason patients are being told that this practice will continue indefinitely; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [34381/23]

Written Answers — Department of Health: Dental Services (11 Jul 2023)

Pat Buckley: ...To ask the Minister for Health the reason the dental treatment services scheme is available to medical card holders in Cork but the Cork University Dental School does not participate in the scheme and charges patients private fees for dental treatment; the reason for same (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [34382/23]

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (6 Jul 2023)

Pat Buckley: ...the issue of an upgrade for the R624 from the N25 to Cobh. As I tabled a number of parliamentary questions but did not get the response I was looking for, I contacted Transport Infrastructure Ireland, TII. It came back with information on what would classify the road for an upgrade. It stated the function of the road must include access to towns and cities, major ports and airports and...
