- Seanad: Presidential Nominations: Motion (18 Jul 2012)
Caít Keane: Absolutely not. I agree totally with what the Minister for Justice and Equality, Deputy Shatter, said yesterday on referendums. There is no commitment in the programme for Government for another referendum on the subject in question. There are so many referendums already in the pipeline, including that on the rights of children, and the Government is only one year in office. We have a lot...
- Seanad: Presidential Nominations: Motion (18 Jul 2012)
Caít Keane: No.
- Seanad: Electoral (Amendment)(No. 2) Bill 2012: Second Stage (12 Jul 2012)
Caít Keane: I welcome the Minister who is a busy one. The Bill is most welcome. Democracy is about the people and our political system must listen to the views of the electorate - ordinary people - on the reality of their lives. Many believe there is a disconnection between politics and the ordinary citizen. In this context, the constitutional convention can go a significant way towards resolving the...

- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Jul 2012)
Caít Keane: I want to know if we can change Standing Orders.
- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Jul 2012)
Caít Keane: Yes. How can we change Standing Orders to provide that a Minister who comes into the House and gives her speech is not accused of reading a script in which she does not believe?
- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Jul 2012)

- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Jul 2012)
Caít Keane: -----a cycle to work scheme for politicians. I may not take it up myself, but one never knows. Stranger things could happen. Another scheme also being launched today is Hailo, a download and application for taxis. Taxi uptake in the city has fallen by 30%. That may have to do with the stringent economic conditions, but there could be other reasons, such as safety issues. The application...
- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Jul 2012)
Caít Keane: I am getting to it.
- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Jul 2012)
Caít Keane: This is a safety issue. One can book a taxi in advance, pay by card, know the taxi one got into and contact it later on the web. It is free for people to download this application onto their telephone. A cashless transaction is safer in taxis. As not everybody will use cards, there will have to be some transaction by cash.
- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Jul 2012)
Caít Keane: Will the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport consider advocating this system?
- Seanad: Order of Business (11 Jul 2012)
Caít Keane: What I have to say will not be as heart-rending as what Senator O'Brien had to say just now. I support Senator Ivana Bacik's comments on the Euroscience Open Forum. Ireland secured the hosting of the forum from stiff opposition from other European countries. I understand the final choice was between Vienna and Dublin and that Dublin won out. This is a major achievement for Ireland. There...

Caít Keane: Senator John Crown got the last Bill through.
- Seanad: Access to Cancer Treatment Bill 2012: Second Stage (11 Jul 2012)
Caít Keane: I commend the Senators on introducing this Bill. It is important we have a reasoned discussion on this topic. We should put it on the record that we do not live in a utopian society. We have to deal with many issues in this House. The references to the Minister of State reading a script were most insulting.
- Seanad: Access to Cancer Treatment Bill 2012: Second Stage (11 Jul 2012)
Caít Keane: I have known the Minister of State for some years.
- Seanad: Access to Cancer Treatment Bill 2012: Second Stage (11 Jul 2012)
Caít Keane: I knew her before she was a Minister of State. She was never a puppet on a string.
