Mary Harney: Responsibility for regulating or for dealing with building societies has rested with the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government for many years. This is why that Minister is sponsoring the legislation. As stated earlier, the intention is that the Government Chief Whip will discuss the timing of this matter with the other Whips.
