Nicky McFadden: I did not get a response to it.
- Seanad: Health Service Staff (4 Jun 2008)
Nicky McFadden: I thank the Minister for remaining to take the Adjournment of the House despite the late hour. I await his response to the issue of homelessness. The true extent and scale of homelessness in this country is grossly misunderstood. A total of 6.9% of households are living in constant poverty. Homelessness is evident on the streets in villages, towns and cities throughout the country. One...
- Seanad: Health Service Staff (4 Jun 2008)
Nicky McFadden: The last paragraph of the Minister's reply is what touches on the wording of my motion, so I am not really impressed by it. I am quite well aware of the services that have been provided, but I do not accept this response. When will these facilities be provided? I accept that a great deal of capital funding has gone into this area but the Minister is aware that the opening of facilities for...
- Seanad: Order of Business (27 May 2008)
Nicky McFadden: I did not think I would get a chance to speak and I thank the Cathaoirleach for his indulgence. I would like to raise the issue of primary care teams and services. We all saw "Prime Time Investigates" last night and heard Professor Drumm clarifying his position this morning. If one were to listen to Professor Drumm one would think everything was hunky dory in this country. A number of...
- Seanad: Order of Business (27 May 2008)
Nicky McFadden: There is no joined-up thinking here. In providing services for patients, the key factor was that the discharge of patients from hospitals would create a greater throughput â I hate that word, but that is what we are trying to achieve. We have got the throughput but the patients are being left high and dry with no services.

- Seanad: Order of Business (22 May 2008)
Nicky McFadden: I refer to the issue of packed accident and emergency departments which, according to The Irish Times today, doctors in Galway have said may lead to 20 deaths per year. I raise this issue in light of the debate which took place in the other House yesterday and in the context of inspiring confidence among people from Sligo and Mayo to go to the centre of excellence in Galway. When people had...
- Seanad: Turbary Rights (21 May 2008)
Nicky McFadden: I welcome the Minister of State and thank him for taking the time to come to the House for this Adjournment matter. Following the publication of the first comprehensive assessment of the status of protected species and their habitats the Grim report detailed that many of these species are in danger. The Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Deputy Gormley, rightly...
- Seanad: Turbary Rights (21 May 2008)
Nicky McFadden: I thank the Minister of State for his reply although I am not happy with it. There are two issues. The priority of protection and of complying with the EU habitats directive is a separate issue in my opinion. That is why I highlighted the issues of over-development and desecration of our peatlands by developers. Sadly, the Minister of State did not address those issues which are the...
- Seanad: Transport 21: Motion (21 May 2008)
Nicky McFadden: I second the amendment. I am sorry Senator Boyle is in the Chair because I intend to have a go at the Green Party launch statement of yesterday. The Senator spoke about hitting commuters by taxing them for using roads over public transport.
- Seanad: Transport 21: Motion (21 May 2008)
Nicky McFadden: I will do so and I thank the Chair for the correction. I shall abide, as always, by the Chair. It is well and good to tax people for using roads if there is a public transport system in place but, sadly, what is being provided is inadequate and insufficient. In its launch document, the Green Party called for a light rail in all major cities. I fully support this. When I was still a county...
