Planning and Development (Strategic Infrastructure) Bill 2006 [Seanad]: Second Stage (Resumed). (15 Jun 2006)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: I said that this Bill would allow for it.

Planning and Development (Strategic Infrastructure) Bill 2006 [Seanad]: Second Stage (Resumed). (15 Jun 2006)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: The Minister of State should relax. The Government wishes to see this Bill passed because it allows for this particular size of generating station. The Government will be forced to change another law but this is not beyond the realms of possibility. This Bill allows for this. I am not scaremongering or alleging that nuclear power will be introduced in the morning. I am merely arguing that...

Planning and Development (Strategic Infrastructure) Bill 2006 [Seanad]: Second Stage (Resumed). (15 Jun 2006)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: I am not being mischievous. I am merely saying that this is a potential result of this Bill. It will allow for infrastructural developments to be fast-tracked. The Bill talks about an industrial installation for the production of electricity, steam or hot water with a heat output of 300 MW or more. What could produce such an output but a facility such as that mentioned by me?

Planning and Development (Strategic Infrastructure) Bill 2006 [Seanad]: Second Stage (Resumed). (15 Jun 2006)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: We will park this issue and agree to differ.

Planning and Development (Strategic Infrastructure) Bill 2006 [Seanad]: Second Stage (Resumed). (15 Jun 2006)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: The Minister of State is free not to agree to differ with me if he wishes. The Bill contains the provision to which I referred and allows facilities that are far beyond anything else bar facilities to which I have referred. Critical infrastructure, which is now referred to as strategic infrastructure, would allow incinerators — they are called thermal power stations — landfills and other...

Written Answers — Proposed Legislation: Proposed Legislation (14 Jun 2006)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: Question 202: To ask the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform when the submissions received during the public consultation process on the proposal for an Immigration and Residence Bill will be published on his Department's website; and the reason for the delay to date. [22973/06]

Human Rights Issues: Motion (Resumed). (14 Jun 2006)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: Ba mhaith liom mo chuid ama a roinnt leis na Teachtaí James Breen, Catherine Murphy, Cowley, Gregory agus McHugh.

Human Rights Issues: Motion (Resumed). (14 Jun 2006)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: Sinn Féin supports this motion. I believe all Deputies with a conscience will vote in favour of it and against the Government amendment. Sinn Féin actively pursued this issue since it was first brought to light by human rights NGOs and concerned individuals monitoring flight patterns. I brought a book of evidence to the Garda Síochána earlier this year and held a meeting with two members...

Planning and Development (Strategic Infrastructure) Bill 2006 [Seanad]: Second Stage (Resumed). (14 Jun 2006)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: There may be 166 speakers in all.

Employment Permits Bill 2005: From the Seanad. (14 Jun 2006)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: I welcome the amendment which ensures that this House will, from day one, allow full access to nationals of Bulgaria and Romania when they accede to the EU. The Government has already done so and we have praised the Government for the stance it has taken. It is a pity the same stance was not taken by other member states. Only six countries allow full access but all 25 should and, upon the...

Employment Permits Bill 2005: From the Seanad. (14 Jun 2006)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: A copy of the employment permit, which amounts to indentured servitude to an employer, is given to the employee, but not the permit itself. It is not a permit that allows somebody to come to Ireland to work, whereby if an employer abuses them they can change to a different employer. It is not a green card as exists in the US and that is what should have been addressed in the Bill.

Offences against the State (Amendment) Act 1998: Motion. (14 Jun 2006)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: Tá mé ag roinnt mo chuid ama leis na Teachtaí Finian McGrath agus Cuffe. Once again I implore all Deputies to consider the highly corrosive effect of this legislation on human rights, civil liberties and democratic life in this State before voting today. I urge all Deputies to reject the Government motion because no emergency exists that could possibly justify the continuation of the...

Offences against the State (Amendment) Act 1998: Motion. (14 Jun 2006)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: No shootings or bomb attacks have been claimed by loyalist groups. There has never been an international terrorist attack in the State and dissident republicans are isolated and few. Therefore, the July and September developments seem a reliable indicator of a definitive end to any conditions that could have been used to try to justify a state of emergency. At this stage, surely it can no...

Written Answers — Social and Affordable Housing: Social and Affordable Housing (13 Jun 2006)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: Question 128: To ask the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government in view of the fact, there is a real probability that mortgage interest rates will continue to increase over the coming 18 months, his views on the findings of the affordability index produced by EBS Building Society and DKM Economic Consultants on 6 June 2006 which found that mortgages State wide cost 27 per...

Written Answers — Departmental Schemes: Departmental Schemes (13 Jun 2006)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: Question 150: To ask the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government his views on whether local authorities should not be using the rental accommodation scheme as an alternative to the construction and provision of social housing for those people within their local authority area who have been identified as being in need of social housing. [22507/06]

Written Answers — Drugs in Prisons: Drugs in Prisons (13 Jun 2006)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: Question 330: To ask the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the way in which the Government will know whether it has been successful in making the prisons drug free when his office admits that it is difficult to quantify the precise level of illegal drugs consumed by prisoners or the numbers of prisoners actually abusing drugs, in view of the covert nature of illicit drug taking...

Written Answers — Drugs in Prisons: Drugs in Prisons (13 Jun 2006)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: Question 331: To ask the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will explain what the Irish Prison Service has learned from the Scottish Prison Service's decision to end mandatory drug testing after ten years due to the fact that it was not achieving the desired results in view of his office indicating that the Irish Prison Service are always conscious of the potential to learn...

Requests to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31. (13 Jun 2006)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to raise a matter of national importance, namely, the urgent need for the Government to revisit and revise its policy on relations with Israel and in particular to end its policy of preferential trade relations with Israel in order to hold Israel accountable for its persistent human rights violations in Palestine, especially in light...

European Communities (Amendment) Bill 2006: Report and Final Stages. (13 Jun 2006)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: Fáiltím roimh an Bhille seo. Mar a dúirt mé sa choiste, tá súil agam go nglacfar leis an Rómáin agus an Bhulgáir go hiomlán ar an chéad lá d'Eanáir an bhliain seo chugainn agus nach gcuirfear aon bhacanna rompu roimhe sin nó aon mhoill ar a mballraíocht. Is breá an rud é dúinn agus do thodhchaí tíortha beaga má thagann tíortha nach iar-impireachtaí iad isteach san...
