Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Regulation of Gas Industry: Discussion (18 Feb 2015)

Michelle Mulherin: What about the cost of the delays? I refer to the North-South interconnector, for example. All of these costs add up and have to be met by the consumer.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Regulation of Gas Industry: Discussion (18 Feb 2015)

Michelle Mulherin: How is that arrived at?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Regulation of Gas Industry: Discussion (18 Feb 2015)

Michelle Mulherin: I would like Mr. Blaney to comment on a few other things. I mentioned the smart grid technology and the Corrib gas project.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Regulation of Gas Industry: Discussion (18 Feb 2015)

Michelle Mulherin: Can Mr. Blaney clarify something about which I asked him at the outset? He said it looks like we are on track to achieve the target of having 40% generated from wind. Can he confirm that this figure relates to our own domestic market? It does not relate to the export market. I know there is an interconnector between the two countries. I ask Mr. Blaney to clarify that. It has been said...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Regulation of Gas Industry: Discussion (18 Feb 2015)

Michelle Mulherin: Everything in Mayo under Gate 3 is intended for the domestic market.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Regulation of Gas Industry: Discussion (18 Feb 2015)

Michelle Mulherin: The point has been made as part of this debate that giving priority to wind is not a desirable renewable policy from a carbon emissions perspective. Is the commission solely looking at the cost, or is it also saying it stacks up from another point of view? Is the witness also saying it stacks up and makes sense, as we try to achieve our carbon emission targets and reduce carbon emissions,...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Regulation of Gas Industry: Discussion (18 Feb 2015)

Michelle Mulherin: It has been established Europe-wide that as we try to achieve these targets, wind is key.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Regulation of Gas Industry: Discussion (18 Feb 2015)

Michelle Mulherin: I understand that but I am trying to make the distinction that solar may not be the solution for us that wind is. I am trying to make the distinction as to which is the best renewable resource to develop and into which to put our funds.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Regulation of Gas Industry: Discussion (18 Feb 2015)

Michelle Mulherin: Ms MacEvilly made the point at the outset that we could face a challenge if the Government tried to pursue that type of policy. Would that be from the European Commission?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Regulation of Gas Industry: Discussion (18 Feb 2015)

Michelle Mulherin: That is right.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) Aer Lingus and Stobart Air (17 Feb 2015)

Michelle Mulherin: That was not my phone, just to clarify. It has no coverage here, it was just a small video. I apologise. I also apologise that I missed the first part of this meeting, I was at another meeting. I welcome everybody here. We all speak for our own regions and I am from County Mayo. We are all delighted with the first charter flight from New York to Knock. I know Aer Lingus played an...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) Aer Lingus and Stobart Air (17 Feb 2015)

Michelle Mulherin: Could Mr. Kavanagh envisage a once-a-week service?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) Aer Lingus and Stobart Air (17 Feb 2015)

Michelle Mulherin: Can Mr. Kavanagh describe who he considers would be the interested parties in the area? This charter flight is fantastic and is very well received. He has data from the previous airline, he knows his business and he has been dealing with the management in Knock airport. Who are the interested parties that he wants to see at the table?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) Aer Lingus and Stobart Air (17 Feb 2015)

Michelle Mulherin: In the context of that type of model, Mr. Kavanagh is referring to a tour operator who block-books in advance and sells so many seats and then Aer Lingus has a number of seats it sells. Is that how it works?

Written Answers — Department of Social Protection: Community Employment Schemes Eligibility (17 Feb 2015)

Michelle Mulherin: 181. To ask the Minister for Social Protection her views on extending the eligibility of community employment schemes to persons over 60 years of age who have been unemployed for up to three years and who are not entitled to a social welfare payment, but are signing for credits; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [6691/15]

Written Answers — Department of Health: Medical Card Applications (17 Feb 2015)

Michelle Mulherin: 394. To ask the Minister for Health the reason for the delay in processing a medical card application in respect of a person (details supplied) in County Mayo; if the Health Service Executive has updated its records in order that future correspondence will be addressed to the applicant and not to the applicant's deceased spouse; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7061/15]

Written Answers — Department of Health: Medical Card Eligibility (17 Feb 2015)

Michelle Mulherin: 395. To ask the Minister for Health the reason a discretionary medical card has not been re-issued in respect of a person (details supplied) in County Mayo; if it will be issued immediately, so as to prevent further financial hardship; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7062/15]

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) IAG (12 Feb 2015)

Michelle Mulherin: I welcome Mr. Walsh and Mr. Griffin. We are trying today to elicit the plans Mr. Walsh has for Aer Lingus if IAG were to acquire it, and I want to focus on that aspect. There is the growth of which Mr. Walsh spoke and the possibility for expansion in transatlantic traffic. I want to ask Mr. Walsh whether he would consider now, even if he has not previously, looking at taking transatlantic...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) IAG (12 Feb 2015)

Michelle Mulherin: I understand that route finished up not because the route was not viable, but because of other operational problems with the airline that ran it. On the board and management of Knock airport, the airport has proven itself to be lean and efficient, and it has been growing against the odds because, as Mr. Walsh will be aware, it is not a State airport in the traditional sense. I ask Mr....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) IAG (12 Feb 2015)

Michelle Mulherin: As I explained, there is a one-off pilgrimage service from New York. If one draws a line from Louth to Galway, one will find that the west and north west are not serviced by motorways. The idea that we can readily access some other airport is not correct. There are no plans in that regard. I did not allow Mr. Walsh to finish, but is this something he might consider?
