Brendan Griffin: Does Mr. Shortt not understand that the reason people are not renewing their licences is that they have no confidence in RTÉ in respect of where their money is going?

Brendan Griffin: A charge has been made against me.
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: RTÉ (Resumed) (13 Sep 2023)
Brendan Griffin: I asked previously for, and I was provided with, information on RTÉ employees doing their own podcasts that could be seen as competition with RTÉ. Could the witnesses furnish the committee with details of people who are contracted to RTÉ, that is, top presenters who are not employees but who are contracted and whether that is being reviewed? I asked about it in July and, in...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: RTÉ (Resumed) (13 Sep 2023)
Brendan Griffin: I understand in principle that Mr. Bakhurst was prepared for Mr. Tubridy to come back on air and negotiations broke down based on the statement he released subsequent to the publication of the Grant Thornton report. There was a line in there in particular that Mr. Bakhurst had difficulty with. Was that not broadly reflected in the Grant Thornton report itself?
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: RTÉ (Resumed) (13 Sep 2023)
Brendan Griffin: In fairness to Mr. Tubridy, he came before this committee and the Committee of Public Accounts and spent a total of, I think, seven hours before them. He did not have to do that. I felt there was a spirit of trying to resolve the matter. Does Mr. Bakhurst not think his approach was disproportionate, being based on that statement that broke negotiations and finished everything?

Brendan Griffin: Was Mr. Bakhurst under pressure internally from others?
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: RTÉ (Resumed) (13 Sep 2023)
Brendan Griffin: Does Mr. Bakhurst think his media commentary about him on 17 August was appropriate as DG? Does he think it was appropriate to use RTÉ platforms to get his point across?
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: RTÉ (Resumed) (13 Sep 2023)
Brendan Griffin: I have one last question, if I may.
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: RTÉ (Resumed) (13 Sep 2023)
Brendan Griffin: In relation to Raidió na Gaeltachta, we know the figures we have talked about here could do so much for the stations in my constituency - in Baile na nGall - and other constituencies. For a relatively small investment, there is a huge return. This recruitment freeze will negatively impact on those stations and those staff who are really pressed in trying to do their job, like the staff...

Brendan Griffin: I wish to make the point that number 100 on the top 100-earners list is, I think, €108,000. There are more than 100 people above that, going right up to more than €500,000. Therefore, if Mr. Bakhurst is looking for low-hanging fruit, there is an orchard there.

- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Future of Sports Broadcasting: Discussion (12 Jul 2023)
Brendan Griffin: I thank the Chair. Four minutes is not a huge amount; it is like the average injury time at the end of a game. I will not be able to ask all of the questions I would like to ask, so if the witnesses do not mind, I will start with Ms O'Connor. I welcome her again. I have one quick question. I recall watching "Sports Stadium" as a kid. I loved it. It was a great format. Has FIS entered...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Future of Sports Broadcasting: Discussion (12 Jul 2023)
Brendan Griffin: It is a good idea. There is great merit in it and there was massive success previously. It is one that there would be a lot of support for across the board.
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Future of Sports Broadcasting: Discussion (12 Jul 2023)
Brendan Griffin: Exactly. It is about inspiring future generations and that brings me back to Mr. Ryan. Many children around the country did not see that outstanding pass by David Clifford into Tony Brosnan for Kerry's second goal against Tyrone. It was one of the most incredible pieces of skill I have ever seen on the field of play, yet many children did not see it. I have been asked by a councillor in...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Future of Sports Broadcasting: Discussion (12 Jul 2023)
Brendan Griffin: If you were to get to the fifth game in the championship and the team has only been on free-to-air television once at that stage, surely that should be ruled out in the same way that certain pairings cannot happen in the draws.
