Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Common Fisheries Policy Reform: Discussion with Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (20 Mar 2013)

Éamon Ó Cuív: It was a disgraceful decision.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Common Fisheries Policy Reform: Discussion with Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (20 Mar 2013)

Éamon Ó Cuív: Sorry, the six and 12 mile limits were part of an international agreement. These were later extended to 200 miles.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Common Fisheries Policy Reform: Discussion with Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (20 Mar 2013)

Éamon Ó Cuív: We are talking about chalk and cheese. When the limit was extended to 200 miles we did not follow suit with our national limits. The Irish Government sold out at that point and again subsequently when Spain and Portugal joined the European Economic Community.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Common Fisheries Policy Reform: Discussion with Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (20 Mar 2013)

Éamon Ó Cuív: When I was a child the international limits were six and 12 miles. However, when the limit was extended to 200 miles for every other country in the world, we made the extraordinary decision to give our fisheries away for nothing. I stated at the time that it was the wrong decision.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Common Fisheries Policy Reform: Discussion with Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (20 Mar 2013)

Éamon Ó Cuív: The Minister appears to have signed off on his side but I notice the European Parliament is still on our side, particularly with regard to the Hague preferences. I suggest, therefore, that we send a political message to our Members of the European Parliament to hang tough on the Hague preferences and demand that they lobby their colleagues not to submit to the Council's position on the Hague...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Common Fisheries Policy Reform: Discussion with Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (20 Mar 2013)

Éamon Ó Cuív: Yes.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Common Fisheries Policy Reform: Discussion with Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (20 Mar 2013)

Éamon Ó Cuív: I welcome the assistant secretary, Cecil Beamish, and the principal officer, Josephine Kelly. It is important we get these regular briefs in respect of what is taking place. At times it is difficult to decipher exactly what the practical outcome will be for ordinary people who must try to sustain a living from fishing. There should be a ban in Europe on any meeting going beyond 11:30 p.m....

Written Answers — Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Bord na gCon Expenditure (20 Mar 2013)

Éamon Ó Cuív: To ask the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine the reason the audited accounts for 2011 of the Irish Greyhound Board have not yet been laid before the Houses of the Oireachtas; if this has been caused by queries from the Comptroller and Auditor General; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14233/13]

[14234/13]

Interim Report on Equine DNA-Mislabelling of Processed Meat: Statements (14 Mar 2013)

Éamon Ó Cuív: Will it be done directly or indirectly?

Interim Report on Equine DNA-Mislabelling of Processed Meat: Statements (14 Mar 2013)

Éamon Ó Cuív: Will horses be registered directly, with breeding societies having nothing to do with it?

Interim Report on Equine DNA-Mislabelling of Processed Meat: Statements (14 Mar 2013)

Éamon Ó Cuív: The Minister has repeated my worry that societies will act as agents. There should be no agent involved. The Minister should take the leap and have a central registration system. If, with the agreement of the applicant, the Minister wants to pass on the information to the breeding societies for breeding purposes, that is a much better way of doing it. It is easy to get defensive when one...

Interim Report on Equine DNA-Mislabelling of Processed Meat: Statements (14 Mar 2013)

Éamon Ó Cuív: That is very interesting. If no one had intelligence and we were the first to discover it, it is extraordinary that it was happening on a pan-European basis. There were a whole lot of malfunctions within the system, yet no one had heard about it even as a possibility. I am sure the Minister would love to have that level of confidentiality at the Cabinet. It is extraordinary that this...

Interim Report on Equine DNA-Mislabelling of Processed Meat: Statements (14 Mar 2013)

Éamon Ó Cuív: I thank the Minister for coming into the House and producing the report. Remarks I make here on the report are preliminary because we did not get the report before we came into the House and we have not had even a cursory opportunity to examine it.

Interim Report on Equine DNA-Mislabelling of Processed Meat: Statements (14 Mar 2013)

Éamon Ó Cuív: I know he did, but it is important. I accept that the Minister gave us a briefing yesterday, but to give a detailed response from the Opposition, we need an opportunity to read the full report before making our contribution. It is easy to make the big speech to solve the problems of the world, but the Minister knows that in government, solving problems requires many hours of painstaking,...

Common Agricultural Policy Reform: Statements (14 Mar 2013)

Éamon Ó Cuív: Will we be returning to this matter?

Common Agricultural Policy Reform: Statements (14 Mar 2013)

Éamon Ó Cuív: I thank the Minister for coming to the House in advance of next week's Council of Ministers. We are engaged in a slow process and the options will narrow until agreement is reached at European level. Even after we reach agreement, however, we will still have to make a number of national choices. We must retain our focus on what we want to achieve in the end game. It is vital that we give...
