- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Automatic Enrolment Retirement Savings System: Discussion (11 Oct 2018)
John Curran: That argument works both ways. If the average lifespan is 82 and some people are living well into their 90s, it is also the case that others are not. The converse of that argument is that a person in their early 60s might have health problems-----
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Automatic Enrolment Retirement Savings System: Discussion (11 Oct 2018)
John Curran: We might make the point that as the pension age is increasing, we are meeting more and more of our constituents who are experiencing the gap between finishing work and getting the State pension. Some are finishing at 65 and some are perhaps a bit younger. However, they are not receiving the State pension for two or three years. Some people might look at this as an interim measure. They...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Automatic Enrolment Retirement Savings System: Discussion (11 Oct 2018)
John Curran: I will come to Deputy Brady next. It will take half a century for the scheme to be fully operational, by the time it gets up to 6% and somebody having the opportunity to pay into it for 45 years. This is way down the road. When the scheme is initially introduced, there will be people who have been in work for ten years or who have been working for 20 or 30 so they will be in transition....
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Automatic Enrolment Retirement Savings System: Discussion (11 Oct 2018)
John Curran: I am talking about the fact that someone might suddenly realise that 50 years of age represents only 20 years of contributions. To be meaningful, that person might need to go beyond the 6% and the scheme accommodates that.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Automatic Enrolment Retirement Savings System: Discussion (11 Oct 2018)
John Curran: That is why I am making the point that somebody who is halfway through his or her working life needs to be aware that he or she will not hit that 60%. If he or she wants to get closer to the 60%, the scheme allows for additional payments. People's children may be finished in college or such and their circumstances change.

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Automatic Enrolment Retirement Savings System: Discussion (11 Oct 2018)
John Curran: Do not upset the Senator.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Automatic Enrolment Retirement Savings System: Discussion (11 Oct 2018)
John Curran: I thank Mr. Nicholson and Mr. Duggan for their presentation which was very informative. It is obviously a complex and detailed process which will further evolve. I ask that they periodically keep the committee updated on progress, particularly after the closure for submissions for the straw man and, in particular, on any wider analysis. I am struck by the fact that this will cause a...
- Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Waste Management (10 Oct 2018)
John Curran: 9. To ask the Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment his plans to set up a waste regulator for the industry in view of the recently published Competition and Consumer Protection Commission report which found that 25% of consumers in the greater Dublin area did not have the option of more than one service provider; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [41058/18]
- Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Waste Management (10 Oct 2018)
John Curran: Recently, the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, CCPC, published a report, which found that one quarter of consumers in the greater Dublin area do not have more than one supplier for their domestic waste and that there is a lack of competition in the market. Does the Minister have specific plans to introduce competition to the market in the Dublin area?
- Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Waste Management (10 Oct 2018)
John Curran: The Minister's reply did not really address the question, which was about competition in the market. I acknowledge the work the CCPC did but it found that one quarter of households in Dublin do not have an alternative to their current supplier. Even in areas where there is another supplier, I do not believe there is real competition in the market. I live in an ordinary Dublin suburb and...
- Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Waste Management (10 Oct 2018)
John Curran: I fully agree with the Minister on recycling but his answer is interesting insofar as it revealed the fact that only a small number of people changed from one supplier to another. That indicates a lack of competition in the market. It also indicates a lack of transparency. If one goes onto the websites of various waste management companies to try to work out what the costs of moving would...

- Housing: Motion [Private Members] (3 Oct 2018)
John Curran: Today's demonstration clearly shows the public's concern with the housing crisis, but probably much more important, its concern with the lack of resources and of achievement in implementing the various programmes. We in the Oireachtas have known since the election of the Thirty-second Dáil that there has been a housing crisis. That is why the elected Members of this Dáil...
