Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Funding the Broadcasting Sector: Discussion with Independent Broadcasters of Ireland (20 Feb 2013)

Michael Colreavy: Perhaps I misheard that. We should consider the public service role of RTE and local media and whether the available funding should be apportioned to support such communications. I am not sure if it is done in any other jurisdiction but I would like to find out. We are talking about fairness and equity. I take the point about the inflated salaries in RTE, but that is a separate issue....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Funding the Broadcasting Sector: Discussion with Independent Broadcasters of Ireland (20 Feb 2013)

Michael Colreavy: I do not propose to deal with particular benefits because every Deputy, Senator, man and woman knows the particular benefits of independent broadcasting. Ocean FM, in the area I represent, has a market share of almost 77% compared to RTE's 23%. That is because a good local service is being provided there.

Mortgage Restructuring: Motion [Private Members] (19 Feb 2013)

Michael Colreavy: At present, nearly 100,000 people are on public housing waiting lists across the State. This is a crisis and it is on our doorsteps. There is a lack of adequate public housing across the State and there has been a dramatic rise in this number since 2009. Many Deputies first became involved in politics through the housing action committees that sprang up during the 1960s. At that time, as...

Water Services Bill 2013 [Seanad]: Second Stage (Resumed) (14 Feb 2013)

Michael Colreavy: Sinn Féin is opposing this Bill, which we regard as unjust and unnecessary. Its intent is to provide another form of collecting money from the taxpayer for the Government through stealth taxes. It is not an attempt to improve the source and supply of water to homes, nor does it tackle the pipeline structure problem or set out how problems such as flooding may be dealt with. I find it...

Promissory Notes: Motion (Resumed) (14 Feb 2013)

Michael Colreavy: The Minister of State should study our policies.

Promissory Notes: Motion (Resumed) (14 Feb 2013)

Michael Colreavy: Last week was a very dark one for democracy in Ireland. Copying the tactics of the former Government, the current Government rushed through a very serious Bill in the middle of the night. All the great novels, plays and films show that crime is always committed under cover of darkness. Last week, under cover of darkness, the Government pushed through legislation that will tie our children...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Lung Health Promotion: Discussion with Irish Lung Health Alliance (7 Feb 2013)

Michael Colreavy: I wish to raise two issues although they are not questions for the witnesses present. I always understood that one of the underlying founding principles of the HSE is that access to health care is based on medical need, rather than ability to pay or geographic location. We now learn that access to health care is based on need, geographic location and a hospital's pharmacy budget.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Lung Health Promotion: Discussion with Irish Lung Health Alliance (7 Feb 2013)

Michael Colreavy: We need urgent clarification from the Department on that.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Lung Health Promotion: Discussion with Irish Lung Health Alliance (7 Feb 2013)

Michael Colreavy: According to the evidence we have heard here today, required medication is or is not being made available depending on a hospital's pharmacy budget. We need clarification on this.
