- Statute of Limitations (Amendment) Bill 2013: Second Stage (Resumed) [Private Members] (17 Apr 2013)
Mary Lou McDonald: I welcome all the women, their family members and their advocates who are in the Visitors Gallery. I also commend my colleague and friend, Deputy Ó Caoláin, on introducing this Private Members' Bill. I was also about to welcome the fact that the Government is supporting the Bill and then I heard what the Minister of State had to say, which rang an alarm bell with me. Whatever...
- National Lottery Bill 2012: Report Stage (Resumed) and Final Stage (17 Apr 2013)
Mary Lou McDonald: These are controversial amendments. Perhaps we will need more time to discuss them.
- National Lottery Bill 2012: Report Stage (Resumed) and Final Stage (17 Apr 2013)
Mary Lou McDonald: I support and endorse Deputy O'Sullivan's comments in respect of the activism and productivity of community-based organisations that care for the environment. One can see from the plethora of local initiatives, including tidy towns committees, how passionate citizens are about this. There is also an economic element to this. Bord Fáilte says that 80% of visitors to Ireland rank the...
- National Lottery Bill 2012: Report Stage (Resumed) and Final Stage (17 Apr 2013)
Mary Lou McDonald: I move amendment No. 30:In page 16, to delete lines 7 to 20.The amendment refers to the section of the Bill which provides for the winding up of An Post National Lottery Company. Over the past 25 years that company has achieved over €12 billion in sales, provided €6 billion in prizes and raised €4 billion for good causes. It is an exemplary record. The Minister will...
- National Lottery Bill 2012: Report Stage (17 Apr 2013)
Mary Lou McDonald: I move amendment No. 25:In page 13, to delete lines 26 to 36, and in page 14, to delete lines 1 to 17.The amendment proposes to repeal the provisions for the licence to hold a national lottery. I have moved the amendment as much for the purposes of consistency as anything else. Members have had a debate on the regulator and there will not be a meeting of minds on it. However, the Minister...
- National Lottery Bill 2012: Report Stage (17 Apr 2013)
Mary Lou McDonald: I understand we are taking together all of those amendments referring to the regulator. I understand why the office of regulator is being established in this legislation. I recall from the Committee Stage discussions that the Minister indicated that in the first instance the regulator's concern will be the national lottery but that it is envisaged that the regulator would have a broader...
- National Lottery Bill 2012: Report Stage (17 Apr 2013)
Mary Lou McDonald: I move amendment No. 2:In page 6, to delete lines 28 and 29.We debated the matter to which this amendment relates on Committee Stage. As the Minister acknowledged at that point, the national lottery has been a great success story for a number of decades. It has provided money for good causes, prize money for the public and is considered, not least by him, as a model of good practice. I...
- Order of Business (17 Apr 2013)
Mary Lou McDonald: To clarify, is it correct that the legislation will not be forthcoming, as had been indicated? Legislation has not been drafted.
- Order of Business (17 Apr 2013)
Mary Lou McDonald: In that case, I assume there will not be legislation. When does the Taoiseach expect Mr. Justice Quirke to report back on the Magdalen redress scheme? Will he provide a date? Will he also clarify the reason that, notwithstanding certain indications he gave at the time, Summerhill in Wexford continues to be excluded from the terms of reference of the redress scheme? The Taoiseach...
- Order of Business (17 Apr 2013)
Mary Lou McDonald: This matter should be given time for discussion and reflection, not least due to the turn of events and the decision by public sector workers to vote against Croke Park II. This is simply another sleight of hand on the part of the Taoiseach to slide something through on the nod, which appears to be the Taoiseach's and the Government's form.
- Leaders' Questions (17 Apr 2013)
Mary Lou McDonald: May I politely suggest to the Taoiseach that for the 426,000 people on the live register and the 1,600 people who emigrate each week, it is the Taoiseach and his Administration that are delivering the so-called lethal injection? The Taoiseach really has shown his hand in his response because he will not countenance levying the burden on those who have more. He simply will not do it.
- Leaders' Questions (17 Apr 2013)
Mary Lou McDonald: He will not look at the high earners in the public sector or the private sector. He simply will not do it.
- Leaders' Questions (17 Apr 2013)
Mary Lou McDonald: If the Taoiseach or his colleagues thought for one second that middle and low-income workers in the public sector were a soft touch for the Government's lethal injection-----
- Leaders' Questions (17 Apr 2013)
Mary Lou McDonald: -----they got it very wrong.
- Leaders' Questions (17 Apr 2013)
Mary Lou McDonald: I suggest the Taoiseach puts on his thinking cap. That was my point last night and I am glad the Taoiseach was tuned in. He clearly is averse to any sort of thinking outside the box. The Government must find €300 million and Sinn Féin has given it concrete examples of where those moneys can be raised.
- Leaders' Questions (17 Apr 2013)
Mary Lou McDonald: Go and find it-----
- Leaders' Questions (17 Apr 2013)
Mary Lou McDonald: -----but back off public sector workers who struggle to heat their homes and to pay their bills.
- Leaders' Questions (17 Apr 2013)
Mary Lou McDonald: This is the reality of what the Government has delivered thus far. Could the Taoiseach please answer my questions?
