- Seanad: Lone Parents: Statements. (23 May 2006)
Ulick Burke: Is that agreed? Agreed.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (23 May 2006)
Ulick Burke: During the year, everyone here welcomed the fact that the Minister for Education and Science and the Tánaiste and Minister for Health and Children indicated collectively that the intake for medical schools would be increased, or doubled, in future. They said that, starting in October this year, there would be an additional intake of approximately 70 students. However, certain suggestions...
- Seanad: School Staffing. (17 May 2006)
Ulick Burke: I thank the Cathaoirleach for selecting this matter and the Minister of State for replying. Kilcooley national school is a small rural school outside Loughrea, County Galway. It was classified in 2000 as being in a very bad condition, one of the worst in the country. The Minister for Education and Science has indicated that a substantial reconstruction and extension programme is to be carried...
- Seanad: School Staffing. (17 May 2006)
Ulick Burke: In the event of the appeal not being successful, can I take it the Minister for Education and Science will give official sanction to increase the pupil-teacher ratio in that school?
- Seanad: School Staffing. (17 May 2006)
Ulick Burke: The Minister of State might convey to the Minister that the number to be enrolled for the next academic year will increase to 81. While this year the number enrolled has fallen, in respect of which the criteria outlined apply, next year there will be an increase in the number of enrolments.
- Seanad: Waste Management: Statements. (17 May 2006)
Ulick Burke: I welcome the Minister of State to the House and the opportunity to contribute to this debate. We are all aware that over the past four or five years various local authorities throughout the country have adopted waste management plans with two priorities. These are the provision of landfill sites in practically every county and the proposal to have incinerators throughout the country. The...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (17 May 2006)
Ulick Burke: I ask the Leader to arrange a debate on the BMW region. A recent report of the Western Development Commission indicates a widening gap between development in the west and other areas of the country. For several years, the west has had Objective One status yet expenditure on infrastructure shows the widest gap between east and west. The gap is now increasing in employment and other services...

Ulick Burke: Is anything happening in Longford?
- Seanad: Road Safety Authority Bill 2004: Second Stage (Resumed). (16 May 2006)

Ulick Burke: Why is Mr. Byrne taking responsibility?
- Seanad: Road Safety Authority Bill 2004: Second Stage (Resumed). (16 May 2006)
Ulick Burke: I welcome the Minister of State. As legislation passes through the House it is important that the Government receives co-operation across the political divide on an issue such as this. Mr. Gay Byrne was interviewed by his successor on the "Late Late Show" on Friday night and the show was repeated last night; perhaps the Minister of State watched it. I would strongly disagree that he was an...
- Seanad: Road Safety Authority Bill 2004: Second Stage (Resumed). (16 May 2006)
Ulick Burke: He is a Government appointee to a very important body. By making such a statement, he knowingly criticised Members of the Oireachtas on national television. I concur with what Senator Ross said that this person, like many others, is a political appointee to that agency.
- Seanad: Road Safety Authority Bill 2004: Second Stage (Resumed). (16 May 2006)
Ulick Burke: I will move on but I ask the Minister of State to talk to the chairperson and request him to reconsider the statement he made because he branded Members of both Houses in such a way. That is not acceptable for a person who is looking for goodwill and co-operation from the Houses of the Oireachtas and other bodies which have an interest in this issue.
- Seanad: Road Safety Authority Bill 2004: Second Stage (Resumed). (16 May 2006)
Ulick Burke: There are known blackspots throughout the country. Anybody who ever drove from Dublin to Galway will remember the 25 crosses on the side of the road between Ballinasloe and Loughrea where 25 deaths occurred. Tragically, despite numerous deputations to the National Roads Authority, it failed to respond to the wishes of the people that something be done as a matter of urgency. Every excuse in...
- Seanad: Road Safety Authority Bill 2004: Second Stage (Resumed). (16 May 2006)
Ulick Burke: Hear, hear.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (16 May 2006)
Ulick Burke: On numerous occasions in the past year I have asked the Leader to bring to the notice of the Minister for Education and Science the serious situation that has developed on an ongoing basis, and which has been repeated today, whereby the bus fleet for transporting pupils to school is unsafe. It is unbelievable that the Minister ignores the calls and concerns of many partners in education who...
- Seanad: Planning and Development (Strategic Infrastructure) Bill 2006: Report and Final Stages. (16 May 2006)
Ulick Burke: I welcome the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Deputy Roche, to the House. Before we commence, I remind Senators that a Senator may speak only once on Report Stage, except the proposer of the amendment, who may reply to the discussions on the amendment. Each amendment must be seconded on Report Stage. Amendment No. 1 in the name of Senator Bannon is consequential...
