- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Coillte Harvesting Rights: Discussion with Irish Timber Council (2 May 2013)
Éamon Ó Cuív: Another issue is that much of the land suitable for planting is now ruled out for ecological reasons. It is nearly impossible to get planning permission on new land. May I make a further comment?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Coillte Harvesting Rights: Discussion with Irish Timber Council (2 May 2013)
Éamon Ó Cuív: On rural recreation and the financial performance of Coillte, as a citizen of this nation, taking the wider interest into account, where a State body invests in public good as an alternative to giving money directly to the Exchequer and then asks that the Exchequer return the money back to it in order for it to do the public good job, that is a dividend. It is fair to say that Coillte has...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Coillte Harvesting Rights: Discussion with Irish Timber Council (2 May 2013)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I welcome the delegation which has made a powerful presentation. The unusual feature of the proposal to sell Coillte's harvesting rights is that I have not heard anyone, other than members of the Government, speak in favour of it. I hope the indications given this week that the Government is rethinking its proposal are correct. The Irish Timber Council has outlined succinctly, from the...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals (2 May 2013)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I am very concerned about this proposal because my experience with European Union regulations and directives is they all pertain to worthy causes and principles with which no one can argue but when they get their teeth in it, it becomes a total bureaucratic nightmare. The reality is that facing eastward, we face Britain and facing to the west, we face the United States of America and Canada....

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals (2 May 2013)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I propose the joint committee should submit a negative reasoned opinion in respect of Europe taking control of this issue. I believe Ireland should have a spatial plan and have no problem with what the Departments are doing. I am absolutely 100% in favour of it but my point is that if members are considering this issue in Ireland's national context, America and Britain are important....

- Other Questions: House Purchase Schemes (1 May 2013)
Éamon Ó Cuív: What about the loan issue?
- Other Questions: House Purchase Schemes (1 May 2013)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I have always been very supportive of tenant purchase schemes. When one considers the houses purchased under such schemes, one will see that they are always kept in very good order. These schemes encourage people to help themselves and to look after their properties. In view of all the cutbacks that have occurred, it is very difficult to ensure that local authority properties are...
- Other Questions: Rural Development Programme Projects (1 May 2013)
Éamon Ó Cuív: Mar a dúirt fear liom uair nuair a bhí mé ag déanamh leithscéalta, "Ní leithscéal atá uaim, tá maidí adhmaid uaim." Sa chás seo, séard atá ó na daoine atá ag fanacht ar a gcuid airgead ná airgead. Ní fadhb dóibh siúd plé idir an Roinn agus na comhlachtaí Leader. Cén uair a...

Éamon Ó Cuív: An bhfuil a fhios ag an Aire nach bhfuil íocaíocht dá laghad déanta i gceantar Chonamara atá faoi chúram Comhairle na n-Oileán? Le sampla a thabhairt dó de na fadhbanna atá ag éirí as seo, tá eagraíocht amháin atá ag fanacht le deontas ón samhradh 2011 agus táimid anois i mí na Bealtaine 2013. Tá...
- Other Questions: Dormant Accounts Fund Management (1 May 2013)
Éamon Ó Cuív: Can the Minister tell me how much money has been disbursed under the dormant accounts scheme and how much there is in the disbursement account, not including the reserve account? Does he agree that in the real world it is slightly farcical that all this money is considered to be a contingent liability on the State? When the Minister goes to spend that money for the benefit of citizens, he...
- Other Questions: Dormant Accounts Fund Management (1 May 2013)
Éamon Ó Cuív: It is fair to say that, constitutionally, rights to property are not absolute but are subject to the exigencies of the common good. Nobody is saying that when a person comes to make a claim his or account would not be paid. There is all the money coming in plus the reserve fund for that end. The problem is that about €300 million is written in the books of the State, of which the...
