Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Cybersecurity for Children and Young Adults: Discussion (Resumed) (6 Dec 2017)

Catherine Noone: I have to interject. Does Ms de Bailliencourt think that I have time to report everything on my feed? I accept it is mostly on Twitter and not Facebook but this is a social media issue. I am sorry if I am perhaps a little oversensitive about this at the moment, although I do not take it to heart as much as another person might as I have become so used to it. However, I hardly have time to...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Cybersecurity for Children and Young Adults: Discussion (Resumed) (6 Dec 2017)

Catherine Noone: I do not want to be too much of a drama queen. I can mute someone who keeps at this and we have to be reasonable in our discourse. I ignore a lot of it. However, sometimes it does get to a person. The strongest person in the world would find it hard to have that kind of stuff written about them.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Cybersecurity for Children and Young Adults: Discussion (Resumed) (6 Dec 2017)

Catherine Noone: There should be buzzwords.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Cybersecurity for Children and Young Adults: Discussion (Resumed) (6 Dec 2017)

Catherine Noone: I appreciate that. I wish to raise a few final things although I know I have taken up a bit of time, for which I apologise. We know that Big Brother is watching us. I get a lot of fashion stuff on my feed, whether I am on Twitter or Facebook, and I enjoy seeing it. Unfortunately, often I am a consumer. I cannot remember which witness made the point that it is in the interest of many...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Cybersecurity for Children and Young Adults: Discussion (Resumed) (6 Dec 2017)

Catherine Noone: To a degree.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Cybersecurity for Children and Young Adults: Discussion (Resumed) (6 Dec 2017)

Catherine Noone: I am sorry to cut off the witness but I will ask two tiny questions. Then I will be finished.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Cybersecurity for Children and Young Adults: Discussion (Resumed) (6 Dec 2017)

Catherine Noone: Is there any legislation that policy makers should consider in this area? That is the first of the last two things. Second, do we have to move to a situation where the default position would be mandatory IP filtering? Do we have to do that to protect our citizens?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Cybersecurity for Children and Young Adults: Discussion (Resumed) (6 Dec 2017)

Catherine Noone: I have done some work on it.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Cybersecurity for Children and Young Adults: Discussion (Resumed) (6 Dec 2017)

Catherine Noone: Basically, Cisco has a product called OpenDNS. I apologise to the Chair but this is definitely my last comment on this. Germany has a policy whereby all schools and possibly all homes have an opt-out system through the telecommunications companies. The default position is that everyone is filtered from offensive stuff. A person can go in, by all means, and opt out of whatever he or she...

Seanad: Order of Business (5 Dec 2017)

Catherine Noone: As many Members, including Senators Boyhan and Mark Daly, raised the issue of Brexit, I will come to that issue last. I will first address the other issues briefly. Senator Higgins raised the issue of volunteers and articulated the point very well. I agree with her comments. It is an issue on which Members could easily have a debate in this House in the new year. Senator Butler raised...

Seanad: Order of Business (5 Dec 2017)

Catherine Noone: The post office should be a possibility or something along those lines. It is not up to the Minister to sort that out but I will communicate to him that it is an issue for some people the Senator is meeting. I do not believe it is an attack on rural Ireland. It may be a reflection of the fact that some people in rural Ireland do not have bank accounts. I do not understand why they do not....

Seanad: Order of Business (5 Dec 2017)

Catherine Noone: It was very heartening. Senator O'Reilly always works hard on Border issues. Realistically, this is a bigger issue in the area he represents. He also paid tribute to the Taoiseach, the Tánaiste and the Minister of State, Deputy McEntee, and had various positive comments to make. Senator Conway made various comments about Brexit.

Catherine Noone: We have received apologies from Senator Lynn Ruane. I welcome viewers who may be tuned in at home. Before I introduce the witnesses, as usual, at the request of the broadcasting and recording services, I ask members, those in the Gallery and witnesses to ensure their phones, at the very least when their microphones are on, are off completely. This afternoon's meeting will examine the...
