Seanad: Special Educational Needs: Statements (Resumed). (21 Feb 2008)

Ned O'Sullivan: A lot done; more to do.

Seanad: Order of Business (21 Feb 2008)

Ned O'Sullivan: I draw the Leader's attention to a Horse Racing Ireland press release from yesterday concerning enhanced links between the Irish racing industry and the industry in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. It will be sending several Irish stallions to stand at stud in Slovakia. It is a welcome development and there has been a long tradition of national hunt racing in that part of the world. Less...

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (6 Feb 2008)

Ned O'Sullivan: I wish to draw the attention of the House to the ongoing crisis at Kerry General Hospital. Will the Leader bring it to the attention of the Minister for Health and Children, Deputy Mary Harney, and ask her to look at the front page editorial in the current edition of The Kerryman? This is a responsible local newspaper, not given to alarmism.

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (6 Feb 2008)

Ned O'Sullivan: Consultants in the hospital have taken the unprecedented step of issuing a joint statement outlining the crisis. These highly professional people are the care providers in the hospital and this is not a step they would have taken lightly. My colleague, Senator Coghlan, is well aware of the situation in Kerry-----

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (6 Feb 2008)

Ned O'Sullivan: -----and has been vocal about it. Perhaps the Leader will ask the Minister to examine this crisis. The hospital was opened only 20 years ago as a state-of-the-art facility for the mid-west region. According to the consultants, however, it is under-staffed, under-resourced, people are at unjustified risk of infection, terminally ill patients are dying without privacy and dignity and the...

Seanad: Order of Business (31 Jan 2008)

Ned O'Sullivan: I rise to support the request of my colleague, Senator Mark Daly, for a debate on the pharmaceutical issue. Like him, in recent days I was contacted by quite a number of pharmacists in the mid-west region. Many are proprietors of small shops and are far from the large multinationals such as Boots who are able to take on board some of the HSE proposals. Many of them are concerned they will...

Seanad: Merits of Farmers' Markets: Statements (6 Dec 2007)

Ned O'Sullivan: One of my favourite stalls in the farmers' markets is the one selling olives. Clearly, olives have not been grown in Kerry for some time. Where does that fit in with the concept of farmers' markets being an outlet for local produce? My second question is probably more appropriate for the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Deputy Gormley. I have been a member of a...

Seanad: Merits of Farmers' Markets: Statements (6 Dec 2007)

Ned O'Sullivan: Ba mhaith liom fáilte a chuir roimh an Aire Stáit. Tréaslaím leis arís as ucht an sár-obair atá á dhéanamh aige sa Roinn. It is regrettable that our scheduling today has the Minister of State making a statement on farmers' markets when there is a very interesting meeting of the Joint Committee on Agriculture, Fisheries and Food on the issue of Brazilian imports. Senator Bradford...

Seanad: Education Policy: Statements (22 Nov 2007)

Ned O'Sullivan: That is a prospect.

Seanad: Education Policy: Statements (22 Nov 2007)

Ned O'Sullivan: Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire agus tréaslaím léi as an sár obair atá á dhéanamh aici sa Roinn Oideachais agus Eolaíochta. This debate has been conducted almost entirely in a non-partisan fashion and I am not one to beat the party drum. Half the time I am not on message.

Seanad: Education Policy: Statements (22 Nov 2007)

Ned O'Sullivan: As a member of Fianna Fáil I am proud of the record of my party in education historically, going back to the days of Donogh O'Malley and Seán Moylan, and especially in the past five to ten years. This applies very much to the current Minister for Education and Science who has been very successful in her brief. I was staggered by the statistics I came across when researching this debate...

Seanad: Education Policy: Statements (22 Nov 2007)

Ned O'Sullivan: We studied a seven-subject syllabus, including Latin and Greek. There was no art, music or career guidance, but our education incorporated a human element, even in mathematics, which I suspect is lacking these days. This system produced people such as John B. Keane, Bryan McMahon, Brendan Kennelly, George Fitzmaurice and Maurice Walsh.

Seanad: Education Policy: Statements (22 Nov 2007)

Ned O'Sullivan: That did not happen by chance. However, our educational philosophy seems to be based now on a utilitarian approach, or the murder machine, mar a dúirt an Piarsaigh.

Seanad: Education Policy: Statements (22 Nov 2007)

Ned O'Sullivan: I apologise for exceeding my time.

Seanad: Education Policy: Statements (22 Nov 2007)

Ned O'Sullivan: He did not use the word "gun".

Seanad: Seafood Industry: Statements (21 Nov 2007)

Ned O'Sullivan: As it is getting late and a number of the statistics I had planned to reveal have been mentioned, I will cut to the chase and pick out some points that have not been raised. I welcome the Minister of State. This time last year he achieved a large quota for the Irish fishing industry in the teeth of opposition and I wish him well in his forthcoming endeavours on that. The fishing industry...

Seanad: Food Safety: Statements (8 Nov 2007)

Ned O'Sullivan: Ba mhaith liom ar dtús fáilte a chuir roimh an Aire. Táimse an-bhuíoch dó as ucht an léaráid suimiúil a thug sé dúinn ar maidin. I welcome the Minister of State and thank him for a most interesting presentation. I wish him well in this challenging portfolio. I also welcome the thoughtful contribution made by Senator Bradford. I agree with the many interesting points he made. It...

Seanad: Food Safety: Statements (8 Nov 2007)

Ned O'Sullivan: In Listowel we call them mutton pies. The Minister of State referred to the issue of traceability, which is a key element in guaranteeing customer satisfaction. Progressive restaurateurs and hoteliers have turned regulation into an opportunity. They have cottoned on to the fact that if one advertises Limerick ham, Wicklow lamb or Clonakilty black pudding on a menu that it is attractive to...

Seanad: Food Safety: Statements (8 Nov 2007)

Ned O'Sullivan: We must be ever more vigilant. Change will not happen overnight. As Bob Dylan said, we have to keep on keeping on. Another issue that might be examined is the question of food provision at major events, which is a bugbear of mine. People believe they can drop their standards with regard to sporting occasions, rock festivals and the like, where shoddy practices are in evidence. I am amazed...

Seanad: Food Safety: Statements (8 Nov 2007)

Ned O'Sullivan: Despite this, one can visit the best international chains in the world and there will be 20 Scotch whiskies, ten American whiskeys and ten Canadian whiskies but no Irish whiskey. While this is not a health issue, it is one that can be considered from an economic perspective. If one walks through any city of the world, one will see South American steak restaurants,Pampas themed restaurants,...
