Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Climate Action Plan 2023: Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment (22 Feb 2023)

Brian Leddin: We are here to discuss the climate action plan, although I know Deputy Cronin is passionate about the broader picture. To be fair to the Minister, we will keep the topic of the debate to the climate action plan as best we can.

Brian Leddin: I thank the Minister and Deputy Farrell. I welcome Deputy O'Sullivan's guest, Max O'Mahony, from Castletownshend in County Cork. There are at least three Corkmen in the room now so the rest of us are outnumbered. Max is very welcome. I thank him for joining us and I hope the session is of interest.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Climate Action Plan 2023: Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment (22 Feb 2023)

Brian Leddin: Yes. We had a very good session with representatives of the Advertising Standards Authority for Ireland, and we will have another. Increasingly, we will come back to this because consumers want to make the right choices when purchasing. It is difficult for them to do so when there is a lot of misinformation.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Climate Action Plan 2023: Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment (22 Feb 2023)

Brian Leddin: We would appreciate that. Increasingly, consumers really do want to make the right choices. In an environment where there is a lot of vague or misleading information, that is difficult.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Climate Action Plan 2023: Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment (22 Feb 2023)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Climate Action Plan 2023: Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment (22 Feb 2023)

Brian Leddin: I will bring it back to the climate piece with respect to remote working and the savings that might be there. I do not see anything in the enterprise, trade and employment section of the climate action plan. It is arguably more for the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications to figure out the climate benefit of enabling further remote working. It would be interesting to...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Climate Action Plan 2023: Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment (22 Feb 2023)

Brian Leddin: If there are no other questions we will finish. I thank the Minister and his officials for coming in. It was a very interesting discussion. We will have him back next year to go through it all again. The process is that there will be a yearly engagement with the relevant Ministers. The Minister's Department has a very important role to play. I look forward to seeing progress in the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Climate Action Plan 2023: Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment (22 Feb 2023)

Brian Leddin: That includes the experience we got from the trip to Aberdeen. Deputy Farrell was on that trip but, unfortunately, did not see the wind turbines. That is a story for another day.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Sport and Recreational Development (21 Feb 2023)

Brian Leddin: I thank the Minister of State for his answer. When we encourage anyone to get involved in sport, we do so not simply for the competitive aspect of it, but we know there are lifelong benefits for the people who get involved. Of course, there are benefits beyond their sporting careers. There are the benefits to their clubs, which are central to their communities. It is critical that we...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Sport and Recreational Development (21 Feb 2023)

Brian Leddin: I mentioned the challenge of retention of girls in sport, particularly those aged 16 and 17. The big part of this is supporting women to get involved in coaching. There is a dearth of women in coaching in all sports in Ireland. If we can tackle that, we can go a long way to addressing the challenge of retention. I am a lifelong member of St. Michael's Rowing Club and have coached there...
