- Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (5 Jul 2023)
Cathal Crowe: There are two pieces of law that cover horse control and horse welfare in Ireland. There are many people who live within those laws and many who do not. Nobody in this country has a cultural entitlement to unconditionally own a horse. Many of our families in the 1940s and 1950s had horses and carts before the family bought a motorcar. That does not confer a right on any of us nowadays to...
- Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (5 Jul 2023)
Cathal Crowe: The resourcing is poor. No one has any right to own an animal unconditionally and treat it like a horse was treated recently in Ballymaley in Ennis. A two-year-old mare had all of her ribcage showing and no water or fodder to eat.

- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)
Cathal Crowe: Go ahead. Let me catch my breath-----
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)
Cathal Crowe: The Chair talking there allowed me to catch my breath - I am after running down the street. I have been following this debate. I am not usually a member of this committee but I have an interest. This is a national story that the whole country is concerned about but also it matters in my locality because we have Lyric FM headquartered down the road from us in Limerick city. Many Clare and...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)
Cathal Crowe: Mr. Lynch, please.
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)
Cathal Crowe: In the past week, Mr. Lynch caught his own breath and I am sure he had meetings to see how to prepare for today. Did he at any time chat with Mr. Tubridy in the past week?
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)
Cathal Crowe: Were there any contract talks ongoing in the past week while the fiasco was unfolding?
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)
Cathal Crowe: I refer to the Lyric FM issue, and there are many more examples. RTÉ staff are speaking to us. It is a pretty broad organisation. We are repeatedly told of the projects that could not happen and were axed, or people who had other pay claims and felt they were being underpaid and their claims were also axed. Would Mr. Lynch be able to quantify today or in writing to this committee, in...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)
Cathal Crowe: Productions, equipment and capital works that might have been cut back on - even the shedding of staff. That has not come out yet but I am sure there have been workforce losses and people retired and were not replaced. I want to see a quantification of that. That is really what galls your workers and your colleagues. At a time of opulence for some, it was sauce for the few and crumbs for...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)
Cathal Crowe: Is he finished with RTÉ?
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)
Cathal Crowe: To conclude, I was a schoolteacher for many years. Kids, when they were in trouble, would often come to us at the classroom door quite upset. However, when you stop and think about it, they were upset at being caught and in trouble; they were not really upset for what they had done. When I hear of cars being returned yesterday and things like that, it does not smack of sincerity.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Driver Recruitment: Discussion (5 Jul 2023)
Cathal Crowe: I have read the opening statements and my questions are largely for Bus Éireann, if that is okay. I do not represent Dublin. I am in County Clare, so my interest is generally transport in Limerick and Clare but also national transport. Are there any routes at the moment that Bus Éireann cannot fulfil or routes that it has agreed with the NTA that it cannot introduce or where it...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Driver Recruitment: Discussion (5 Jul 2023)
Cathal Crowe: Does Bus Éireann have plans to address that, given that it is quite a congested route?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Driver Recruitment: Discussion (5 Jul 2023)
Cathal Crowe: That is good to know. Could I just ask more generally on a nationwide basis, approximately how many Bus Éireann vehicles are contracted to the Department of Education to fulfil school runs in the mornings and afternoons? Is there an approximate figure?
