Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Future of Higher Education: Discussion (11 Feb 2015)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: I thank the witnesses. One of the strengths of the committee is to be informed by the witnesses and their research and ethic. We can take this away and I am terribly interested in this. When the economy is discussed, one has to talk about education because they go hand in glove. While Mr. Zhang did not contribute, Dr. Larkin said that without his work ethic, much of this would not have...

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Feb 2015)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: The Senator cannot say that.

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Feb 2015)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: The Senator cannot speak like that. He cannot claim that it was a direct assault-----

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Feb 2015)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: Does he have his definitions of "dignity" with him this morning?

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Feb 2015)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: The Senator should sit down. He is now coming here to give us definitions of "dignity"-----

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Feb 2015)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: It must have been a huge bustle he was walking past. On a serious note, I would like the Minister for Finance, Deputy Noonan, to come to the House and explain to me how Bank of Ireland is continuing to do to the people what it did during the banking crisis. Edgar Allen Poe wrote a short story entitled The Fall of the House of Usher, and one could align it to the fall of the house of banking...

Seanad: Order of Business (5 Feb 2015)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: I stand to relay a bit of very good news. We have a lottery regulator, Mr. Liam Sloyan. Although he exists, I cannot find him because he has not yet taken up his position. He exists in the ether. I am delighted he exists because he has much to answer for and to look after with the lottery, which was taken out of Irish hands and sold in order to build the children's hospital.

Seanad: Order of Business (5 Feb 2015)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: We have not seen one brick of that. Mr. Sloyan comes from an actuarial background. I am delighted at his appointment, which came on 17 November.

Seanad: Order of Business (5 Feb 2015)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: Yes. He was very kindly going to answer the question yesterday and I now have the answer. The Irish lottery has seen much debacle and I just wanted to let Senators know that although the regulator exists, he has not yet taken office. It is being dealt with by the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform. There is a second issue which is not such good news. Will the Leader invite the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: National Strategy and Framework for Higher Education: Higher Education Authority (4 Feb 2015)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: I do not know where to start. I will ask one general question to Mr. Boland. Does he believe there would be a place to write a national strategy for higher education about teaching at third level? Based on my reading of the National Strategy for Higher Education to 2030, we seem to have this fear to align it independently to what it is. It is consistently aligned to research. Of course,...

Marie Louise O'Donnell: More money is put into science.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: National Strategy and Framework for Higher Education: Higher Education Authority (4 Feb 2015)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: It does not give the results the arts give. Anyway, that is my view.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: National Strategy and Framework for Higher Education: Higher Education Authority (4 Feb 2015)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: That was my question.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: National Strategy and Framework for Higher Education: Higher Education Authority (4 Feb 2015)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: There is something very sad about having to have young students tell us where we are going wrong in our teaching. We should have a proper strategy and know what we mean by qualitative teaching across all disciplines. We take that very much for granted at third level. We do not take it so much for granted at first level and second level. That is what I meant by my remark earlier. One of...

Marie Louise O'Donnell: I beg the Chairman's pardon and I thank her.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: National Strategy and Framework for Higher Education: Higher Education Authority (4 Feb 2015)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: If Mr. Boland was to give urgent advice to the Government, what would it be? Across the whole area of higher education, is there something urgent coming down the track in the next two or three years that we are not giving sufficient attention to or is there anything that comes to mind that he would like to give advice on?

Seanad: Order of Business (4 Feb 2015)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: Never.
