National Pensions Reserve Fund Commission - Financial Statements 2011 (22 Nov 2012) Shane Ross: They did not go out on the market and did not seek anyone else but chose Mr. Corrigan. While he may be very good at his job, they did not go to the market for it. Mr. Corrigan is accompanied by Ms Eileen Fitzpatrick, who was appointed last year to NewERA. Was she recruited in the market?

National Pensions Reserve Fund Commission - Financial Statements 2011 (22 Nov 2012) Shane Ross: Mr. Corrigan knows what is my question. Was she recruited in the market for the job as head of NewERA?

National Pensions Reserve Fund Commission - Financial Statements 2011 (22 Nov 2012) Shane Ross: Mr. Corrigan cannot come before the committee claiming these salaries are justified because the NTMA goes out into the market and must pay them because of the competition, when neither he himself nor Ms Eileen Fitzpatrick, who is sitting beside him, was recruited in the market. Is it not correct that insiders are being appointed to top jobs in there without recruiting in the market?
- Leaders' Questions (22 Nov 2012)
Shane Ross: That is utterly ridiculous. I am not asking for a comment and I specifically indicated I did not want a comment on that court case.
- Leaders' Questions (22 Nov 2012)
Shane Ross: I am asking how District Court judges are vetted before they get the job.
- Leaders' Questions (22 Nov 2012)
Shane Ross: It seems the refusal of the Government to answer the question means that the old political jobbery-----
- Leaders' Questions (22 Nov 2012)
Shane Ross: I do not wish to tread into territory that is delicate and I have deliberately avoided it. I have asked how these people are vetted. I will answer some of the question myself. They do not have to be interviewed or answer specific questions and it is an advantage to have political affiliations.
- Leaders' Questions (22 Nov 2012)
Shane Ross: Will the Minister give us an assurance-----
- Leaders' Questions (22 Nov 2012)
Shane Ross: I am simply asking that as a Minister in a reforming Government, Deputy Burton will give an assurance that the Labour Party, at least, is committed to removing the naked appointment of judges from the political arena.
- Leaders' Questions (22 Nov 2012)
Shane Ross: Last week, in reply to a question I put to him in this Chamber, the Taoiseach graciously agreed there was a case for judges making declarations of their interests. This was in response to a judge having recused himself from a case when he held shares in CRH plc. Judges are in the spotlight at present and I wish to ask the Minister a question. This week a judge from the District Court was...
- Pre-European Council Meeting: Statements (21 Nov 2012)
Shane Ross: There is a wonderful musical at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre called "Anglo: The Musical". It sums up the problem of Ireland, its relationship with Europe and a possible solution far better than the Taoiseach's speech. There is not much point in the Taoiseach saying the only item on the agenda is the multi-annual budget. That is not the only item on the agenda of Europe today. The...
- Pre-European Council Meeting: Statements (21 Nov 2012)
Shane Ross: Let us resolve to go to Europe and, at every occasion during the Presidency, bark and warn them that we will not be trifled with and that we will park the promissory notes, whether they like it or not, on 31 March. We are giving them a warning now so that we can re-negotiate a real deal on debt, not just on the multi-annual budget.
- Written Answers — Department of Finance: Ministerial Meetings (21 Nov 2012)
Shane Ross: To ask the Minister for Finance the number of meetings he has had with the chairmen and chief executives of all the covered banks, individually and collectively, since he became Minister for Finance; the dates of the meetings; the topics discussed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [51800/12]
- Written Answers — Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Youth Enterprise Initiatives (21 Nov 2012)
Shane Ross: To ask the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation his plan he has to encourage youth entrepreneurship; if the Government has any plans to set up a youth entrepreneurship fund; if he sees the benefits in encouraging grant supports outside the areas of manufacturing and export; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [51723/12]
- Leaders' Questions (14 Nov 2012)
Shane Ross: I join the Taoiseach and Deputies Martin and Adams in expressing sympathy to the family of Savita on the tragedy that happened at Galway University Hospital. Last year the Government courageously decided to hold a referendum on judicial pay and conditions, which was passed by the electorate with a large majority. That was a good start to reforms, which, I suggest, are now necessary in a...
- Leaders' Questions (14 Nov 2012)
Shane Ross: I thank the Taoiseach for promising discussions. Of course, as the Taoiseach will understand, I am looking for more than discussions, because this is a serious matter. It is quite obvious that the opaque way in which judges conduct their business is not open to any public scrutiny. Judicial reform is important. The Taoiseach will be aware that I am alleging no misconduct in this case....
- Written Answers — Department of Finance: Ministerial Meetings (14 Nov 2012)
Shane Ross: To ask the Minister for Finance the number of meetings he has had with the Public Interest Directors of the banks, individually and collectively, since he became Minister for Finance; the dates of these meetings; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [50429/12]
- Pensions and Retirement Lump Sums: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (7 Nov 2012)
Shane Ross: The problem with debating that particular subject in this House is that Members are judges in their own case. The people perceive the Dáil, the Seanad, Ministers, ex-Ministers, Deputies and Senators to be deciding that their own pay should be decided in this House. Even if they are not deciding precisely what is their own pay, they, including the Minister, possibly are deciding what...
- Pensions and Retirement Lump Sums: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (7 Nov 2012)
Shane Ross: Yes. That is perceived to be wrong. I suggest that perhaps there are ways out of this. As Opposition Members always are accused of not making constructive suggestions, I wish to so do. Why not take it out of this House completely and utterly in order that all these matters-----
- Pensions and Retirement Lump Sums: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (7 Nov 2012)
Shane Ross: The Minister should wait for one minute. He should stop interrupting for a minute.
