Government Decision on Exiting Programme of Financial Support: Motion (Resumed) (20 Nov 2013)

Éamon Ó Cuív: There may be good reasons the Government did not go for the backstop and I would be interesting in hearing them - the real reasons. However, it seems wrong that what happened was that a decision was made by the Government and after that decision was made, with a big fanfare the Taoiseach came into the House to make a five minute speech in which he stated the Government had made a decision...

Government Decision on Exiting Programme of Financial Support: Motion (Resumed) (20 Nov 2013)

Éamon Ó Cuív: The Minister of State has got it in one.

Government Decision on Exiting Programme of Financial Support: Motion (Resumed) (20 Nov 2013)

Éamon Ó Cuív: It was not. The Minister of State was technically correct. There had not been a request, but the issue was being pushed from or leaked from elsewhere in Europe. One of the issues that arises from the way this has been done is that it gives rise to a concern that there are European elements to this issue. It is a concern that there are elements in back rooms elsewhere in Europe who...

Written Answers — Department of Health: Medical Card Eligibility (20 Nov 2013)

Éamon Ó Cuív: 206. To ask the Minister for Health the reason a P21 will not be accepted when assessing income of an applicant for a medical card, in the situation where a person's primary income is realised from PAYE employment and all of the subsidiary income from self-employment is detailed on the P21; if he will accept that in reply to a similar Parliamentary Question - No. 1163 of 5 November 2013 - he...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Annual Report 2012: Discussion with Coillte (19 Nov 2013)

Éamon Ó Cuív: It is a big debate.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Annual Report 2012: Discussion with Coillte (19 Nov 2013)

Éamon Ó Cuív: A good idea.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Annual Report 2012: Discussion with Coillte (19 Nov 2013)

Éamon Ó Cuív: Could we discuss that at our private meeting?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Annual Report 2012: Discussion with Coillte (19 Nov 2013)

Éamon Ó Cuív: I agree with that. It is a sensible suggestion.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Annual Report 2012: Discussion with Coillte (19 Nov 2013)

Éamon Ó Cuív: I wish to ask a relevant question. This is an extraordinary situation because the shareholder is either the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine or the Minister for Finance.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Annual Report 2012: Discussion with Coillte (19 Nov 2013)

Éamon Ó Cuív: They are the same people who give the competitors, namely, the private farmers, capital grants and forest premium to plant land. The shareholder owns Coillte but gives somebody else all of our money to plant land. Coillte has told us that this means that it is not viable for it to compete and plant land. It is the one organisation that is owned by the same people who give grants to the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Annual Report 2012: Discussion with Coillte (19 Nov 2013)

Éamon Ó Cuív: That is a big policy issue for Government and is not an issue for Coillte Teoranta. It is an issue for the committee to examine on another day. What will happen if a higher percentage of the mature forest is owned by individual farmers? Up to now we have been able to provide an adequate amount of timber to the mills to keep them viable and prevent collapse. Will they be put in jeopardy...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Annual Report 2012: Discussion with Coillte (19 Nov 2013)

Éamon Ó Cuív: What about ten to 20 years?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Annual Report 2012: Discussion with Coillte (19 Nov 2013)

Éamon Ó Cuív: We must pay more money and keep the product that we own, as a people, out of the market of planting. I suggest we cannot really go further because it is a major policy issue. We might get the Minister before the committee in the near future to tease it out with him, because it is a fundamental policy issue.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Annual Report 2012: Discussion with Coillte (19 Nov 2013)

Éamon Ó Cuív: Could Mr. Britchfield confirm that Coillte has not been selling forestry as forestry? In other words, 200 hectares here or there, in the greater scheme of things, are probably in multiple sales.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Annual Report 2012: Discussion with Coillte (19 Nov 2013)

Éamon Ó Cuív: I personally have no problem with that. I know that Coillte sold the odd bit of land around Cong and was very much in favour of that. It also provided land for the community centre, but Coillte is not selling forestry. There have been a lot of stories about Coillte selling significant forests as forestry.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Annual Report 2012: Discussion with Coillte (19 Nov 2013)

Éamon Ó Cuív: I thank Mr. Britchfield for the presentation. As he knows, I have much time for the work of Coillte Teoranta. It is worth recording here that the forestry industry, not only in the form of Coillte, has performed exceptionally well in the context of the downturn of the economy, having turned a 70% home market into a 70% export market. I do not believe any major timber-processing operation...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Annual Report 2011: Discussion with Marine Institute (19 Nov 2013)

Éamon Ó Cuív: I thank Dr. Heffernan for his presentation and commend him for his enthusiasm for the work of the staff of the Marine Institute. Once again, I regret the €1 billion contribution, in the form of free fish, as shown on slide No. 3, which we give to our European partners every year and which is not recognised. As a member of the European Union for 40 years, we have now made a...

Written Answers — Department of Education and Skills: School Transport Availability (19 Nov 2013)

Éamon Ó Cuív: 260. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills the reasons school transport has not been provided to a person (details supplied) in County Galway; if a review requested recently has been carried out by Bus Éireann; if so, the decision of this review; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [49589/13]

Written Answers — Department of Public Expenditure and Reform: Flood Relief Schemes Applications (19 Nov 2013)

Éamon Ó Cuív: 269. To ask the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform when remedial works will commence on the River Clare in County Galway to prevent further flooding; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [48931/13]

Written Answers — Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht: Forbairt Thionscal na hIascaireachta (19 Nov 2013)

Éamon Ó Cuív: 375. To ask the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht cén infheistíocht atá ceadaithe ag Údarás na Gaeltachta don fheirmeoireacht éisc i ngach bliain ó 2011 i leith, an méid airgid a infheistíodh go dtí seo i rith na tréimhse sin, cé na comhlachtaí a bhí i gceist; agus an ndéanfaidh sé ráiteas ina...
