Finance (Office of Tax Simplification) Bill 2018: Second Stage [Private Members] (11 Apr 2019)

Shane Cassells: I wish to thank the long list of speakers who contributed. One wonders about the complaints the Ceann Comhairle gets about Members being unable to get speaking time. This is an important Bill. My colleague, Deputy John Lahart, spoke about the various areas where an office of tax simplification could be of assistance. I know of many elderly people who are often overwhelmed by the...

Proposed approval by Dáil Éireann of the Direct Election of Mayor Plebiscite Regulations 2019: Motion (10 Apr 2019)

Shane Cassells: It is a pleasure to speak about this issue of plebiscites and directly elected mayors. It is great to hear the subject being spoken about at all because there has been little to talk about up until this point. While the motion deals with procedural and administrative measures related to the holding of the plebiscites, I will use my time to address the detail of what will be involved in the...

Public Accounts Committee: 2017 Annual Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts
Vote 24 - Justice and Equality
(4 Apr 2019)

Shane Cassells: I welcome the Secretary General and his colleagues. There are 5,980 people in accommodation centres and 517 in hotels, totalling 6,497. I believe Mr. O'Driscoll stated that these figures had probably increased. The growth figures outlined in his opening statement are significant. He stated that Ireland had committed to receiving 4,000 persons under the refugee protection programme. How...

Public Accounts Committee: 2017 Annual Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts
Vote 24 - Justice and Equality
(4 Apr 2019)

Shane Cassells: I suppose the challenges in tendering arise because the process of asylum seekers approaching the Department is reversed compared with the refugee protection programme. Mr. O'Driscoll spoke about the communication process with local authorities and working with them. He also mentioned the pressures in the Department's accommodation system, which was putting it mildly. In terms of the...
