Seanad: Order of Business (3 Mar 2009)

Ned O'Sullivan: I regret that on all these occasions the taxi drivers tend to be non-nationals. I have the greatest sympathy for non-nationals trying to earn a living here for themselves and their families in a foreign land. Whether they are Irish, English, French or Greek, the taxi regulator needs to ensure all the taxi drivers in the city at least know where O'Connell Street is.

Seanad: Harbours (Amendment) Bill 2008: Committee Stage (Resumed) (19 Feb 2009)

Ned O'Sullivan: I welcome the Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Deputy Noel Ahern. Like the previous speakers, I do not intend to go into further fine detail on a Bill that has already been fairly well thrashed out in the House. However, it would be remiss of me not to go over one or two points raised by my colleague, Senator O'Donovan, who is indisposed today and cannot be with us. He,...

Ned O'Sullivan: The brother goes to Dingle.

Seanad: Harbours (Amendment) Bill 2008: Committee Stage (resumed) (11 Feb 2009)

Ned O'Sullivan: I welcome the Minister of State to the House and thank him for his patience and forbearance in this long drawn-out debate on this amendment. I also thank him for his understanding of the positions taken both inside and outside the Chamber by Members. I fully endorse the position Senator O'Donovan has taken over the past several days and congratulate him on his tenacity and commitment in...

Seanad: Harbours (Amendment) Bill 2008: Committee Stage (resumed) (11 Feb 2009)

Ned O'Sullivan: I try to avoid making mistakes. I am lucky enough in that regard.

Seanad: Harbours (Amendment) Bill 2008: Committee Stage (resumed) (11 Feb 2009)

Ned O'Sullivan: The Acting Chairman, Senator Coghlan, is intimately acquainted with Fenit and is aware that its future will be as a leisure-fishing port. There is an important industry operating there which, I am sure, is close to the Acting Chairman's heart. Other than that, however, the main activities carried out there are by those who fish for a living and those involved in tourism angling. In recent...

Seanad: Education Matters: Statements (10 Feb 2009)

Ned O'Sullivan: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Devins. This is a timely debate and I am glad of the opportunity to participate in it. As previous speakers indicated, these are difficult times globally and nationally. Every sector of the economy, including that relating to education, is suffering. Difficult decisions will have to be made by the Department of Education and Science and every other...

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Feb 2009)

Ned O'Sullivan: Will the Leader arrange a debate on the future of the horse racing industry, which, like every other sector of the economy, is facing a rather uncertain future? It is a very big industry and creates many jobs at various levels, from breeding and training to racecourse management. It regularly injects a large amount of money into small towns such as Kilbeggan, Mallow and Thurles, in addition...

Seanad: Report on European Union Scrutiny: Statements (3 Feb 2009)

Ned O'Sullivan: Ag 10.30 a.m. amárach.

Seanad: Report on European Union Scrutiny: Statements (3 Feb 2009)

Ned O'Sullivan: Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire Stáit. In welcoming the Minister of State to the House, I commend him personally, his Department and the Department of Health and Children, in so far as it is responsible for food safety, on the work they are doing to ensure the quality of food the consumer gets in Ireland is first class. I take a leaf from Senator Bradford's book. He mentioned that it might...

Seanad: Report on European Union Scrutiny: Statements (3 Feb 2009)

Ned O'Sullivan: The Cathaoirleach will always be welcome there. I told the proprietor that was a great steak and asked him where it came from. He said his brother reared it, his other brother killed it, and he gave me the abattoir number, and he sells it. That is fantastic. A few restaurants in Dublin do something similar and I wonder if we can promote that. How would one label a pint of draught beer?...

Seanad: Report on European Union Scrutiny: Statements (3 Feb 2009)

Ned O'Sullivan: Oliver Cromwell's constituency.

Seanad: Recall of Irish Pork and Bacon Products: Statements (10 Dec 2008)

Ned O'Sullivan: Without repeating what everybody else has said, this is a very important and worrying issue for the country in terms of the overall economy and particularly for pig producers, processors, factory workers and consumers. I commend Senator O'Reilly on a very measured contribution and the Opposition, in the main, has been responsible in this debate, which is very welcome. The matter is too...

Seanad: The Economy: Statements (5 Dec 2008)

Ned O'Sullivan: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Mansergh, to the House. He is a very popular Minister in my part of the country. He was always very supportive of our literary festival in Listowel, long before he ever set foot on the greasy pole, which he appears to be climbing with dexterity. I listened closely to the contribution of the Minister, Deputy Brian Lenihan, both in the House and on the...

Seanad: The Economy: Statements (5 Dec 2008)

Ned O'Sullivan: He was lambasted in the media and by all the smart commentators. That was a sad day because patriotism is something to which we should all aspire. I respect and like to see a senior politician calling for patriotism. It is not a dirty word. It might have been sullied at one time by people who thought it meant blowing people up, but, to me, patriotism is trying to reach out to help one's...

Seanad: The Economy: Statements (5 Dec 2008)

Ned O'Sullivan: The Opposition have a habit of saying there was much squandermania in the past ten years. I did not hear the Opposition leaders at any stage saying we should not have the Nenagh bypass, the new rail infrastructure to the west, the huge investment in ports like Shannon-Foynes, Waterford and Cork, or state-of-the-art social housing.

Seanad: The Economy: Statements (5 Dec 2008)

Ned O'Sullivan: I did not hear any of that for the past ten years. All of a sudden, however, it is supposed to be squandermania. That is one good thing the Government did for the past ten years, namely——-

Seanad: The Economy: Statements (5 Dec 2008)

Ned O'Sullivan: ——-it put in place infrastructure and institutions which will help us to weather the storm we are now facing. The former Taoiseach, Charlie Haughey, said economics is the dismal science. There is no doubt it is a dismal science at present. I studied economics in UCD at one time and I believe practical common sense goes a long way in dealing with financial problems. I am a small...

Seanad: Order of Business (2 Dec 2008)

Ned O'Sullivan: I wish to raise something that was brought to my attention in Kerry at the weekend, which I hope the Leader will bring to the attention of the Ministers for Justice, Equality and Law Reform and Foreign Affairs. It relates to nefarious activities by individuals who are passing themselves off as migration agents "assisting" Irish citizens who wish to move to Australia. Members will be aware...
