- Seanad: Public Health (Tobacco Products and Nicotine Inhaling Products) Bill 2023: Report and Final Stages (5 Dec 2023)
Lorraine Clifford-Lee: It would be remiss of me to allow this moment pass without saying a word on this issue. I thank the Minister of State; the Minister, Deputy Donnelly; and everybody in the Department who worked so hard on this important legislation. When Micheál Martin was Minister for health we introduced the smoking ban. That was a significant public health measure replicated around the world. This...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Services in Counties Dublin, Kildare, Meath and Wicklow: Discussion (29 Nov 2023)
Lorraine Clifford-Lee: I appreciate the Chair giving me time, as I am not a member of this committee. I add my name to the expressions of solidarity with workers who experienced what was probably unimaginable terror last Thursday. They all acted very bravely. I am disappointed to hear about the level of financial loss to the transport network as a result of what happened. That will impact everybody in Dublin....

Lorraine Clifford-Lee: Will Ms McKay put that on the agenda for the next meeting, and keep in contact with me?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Services in Counties Dublin, Kildare, Meath and Wicklow: Discussion (29 Nov 2023)
Lorraine Clifford-Lee: When I put word out on social media that an extra service was being put on in the morning and evening, there was a huge reaction because people have been crying out for additional services. It is a good service, and a well-used service. However, we have strong population demands in north County Dublin. It is the fastest growing part of the country. Many young people and others are coming...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Services in Counties Dublin, Kildare, Meath and Wicklow: Discussion (29 Nov 2023)
Lorraine Clifford-Lee: It has not been communicated with me, but I know some local people have made contact. They were told that one side of the road was unsafe. Maybe a solution could be found, because there is a hotel with a large car park, and I know it is supportive of the bus service because it also serves the hotel. Will they work in conjunction with the hotel to examine the possibility of the bus pulling...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Services in Counties Dublin, Kildare, Meath and Wicklow: Discussion (29 Nov 2023)
Lorraine Clifford-Lee: There are a lot of elderly people. It is not far from the town of Swords, but it is a rural area and people have no other public transport.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Services in Counties Dublin, Kildare, Meath and Wicklow: Discussion (29 Nov 2023)
Lorraine Clifford-Lee: I think Mr. Ryan would agree that having the last bus out of the city centre at 6 p.m. is too early. I have been working in different working environments all my life, but I have never left the office by 6 p.m. in any place I have worked in order to get home.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Services in Counties Dublin, Kildare, Meath and Wicklow: Discussion (29 Nov 2023)
Lorraine Clifford-Lee: Many people have said that to me. They are just not able to leave the workplace at that or at any time.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Services in Counties Dublin, Kildare, Meath and Wicklow: Discussion (29 Nov 2023)
Lorraine Clifford-Lee: I challenge Mr. Ryan to take one of those buses to see how long it would take him to get home.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Services in Counties Dublin, Kildare, Meath and Wicklow: Discussion (29 Nov 2023)
Lorraine Clifford-Lee: That is perfect. I thank the Leas-Chathaoirleach.
- Seanad: Public Health (Tobacco Products and Nicotine Inhaling Products) Bill 2023: Committee Stage (28 Nov 2023)
Lorraine Clifford-Lee: I move amendment No. 2: In page 20, lines 28 to 33, to delete all words from and including "(1) Subject" in line 28 down to and including line 33 and substitute the following: "It shall be an offence for a person to advertise a nicotine inhaling product in a cinema." This is a very important amendment from my two colleagues. I am sure everyone agrees that it makes sense. The cinema...
- Seanad: Public Health (Tobacco Products and Nicotine Inhaling Products) Bill 2023: Committee Stage (28 Nov 2023)
Lorraine Clifford-Lee: I appreciate the Minister’s response. It was proportionate. The passage of this legislation as quickly as possible should be the priority of everybody in these Houses. I understand the Minister not wanting to pass comment while the public consultation process is under way. I appreciate that and hope that in the fullness of time, we will see this issue encapsulated in the second...
