Other Questions: Youth Services Funding (28 Nov 2017)

Brian Stanley: I make them to the Minister genuinely.

Other Questions: Youth Services Funding (28 Nov 2017)

Brian Stanley: 44. To ask the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs the reason funding for an organisation (details supplied) in County Laois is lower than the national average. [50222/17]

Other Questions: Youth Services Funding (28 Nov 2017)

Brian Stanley: I want to ask the Minister about funding for youth work at Laois youth work centre. The county has consistently received a very small slice of the cake in that regard. For example, in the current year it received €107,000 while Cavan received €333,000 - although I am not arguing for the Minister to take money off Cavan - and Wexford received €440,000.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Post Office Network: Discussion (Resumed) (28 Nov 2017)

Brian Stanley: As my party's spokesperson on this issue, we are very concerned about the slippage and the fact that some of these issues were highlighted in 1987. In the early 2000s there was a lot of talk about trying to reform the post office network. Time has been lost and we are trying to play catch-up. Since the formation of this Dáil a year and a half ago we have discussed this issue at the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Post Office Network: Discussion (Resumed) (28 Nov 2017)

Brian Stanley: We do not get many opportunities to discuss these issues while everybody is at the table. I welcome the increase of €8 million in the profit made on the parcel service business. There are four mail centres in the State, at Portlaoise, Athlone, Dublin and Cork, which are important pillars of the post office network. In Portlaoise there is a new parcel centre beside the mail...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Post Office Network: Discussion (Resumed) (28 Nov 2017)

Brian Stanley: We must resolve today to do what is needed to ensure we will have a proper, viable network in place for the future.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Bord na Móna: Chairperson Designate (28 Nov 2017)

Brian Stanley: I welcome Mr. Meagher and Ms Curry. I congratulate Mr. Meagher on his appointment as chairman designate of the board. As a former employee of Bord na Móna, as someone whose family lived in a Bord na Móna house in Edenderry and as a midlands Deputy, I have a considerable interest in this. I want to try to address a number of specific issues. On the issue of biomass, all we have...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Bord na Móna: Chairperson Designate (28 Nov 2017)

Brian Stanley: I ask Mr. Meagher to address that specifically. He mentioned site visits. I would like him to visit Coolnamona and Kilberry. I would like to meet him at Coolnamona, if that could be arranged at some time in the near future.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Bord na Móna: Chairperson Designate (28 Nov 2017)

Brian Stanley: I was waiting a long time.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Bord na Móna: Chairperson Designate (28 Nov 2017)

Brian Stanley: Will Mr. Meagher address my questions on renewables and energy generation from wind, solar and biogas from waste?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Bord na Móna: Chairperson Designate (28 Nov 2017)

Brian Stanley: I understand that 80% of what is produced at Cul na Móna goes to Britain.

Written Answers — Department of Children and Youth Affairs: Youth Work Projects Funding (28 Nov 2017)

Brian Stanley: 57. To ask the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs her plans to increase the funding for youth work projects in County Laois in view of the growing young population. [50223/17]

Topical Issue Debate: Hospital Services (22 Nov 2017)

Brian Stanley: The real issue here is a lack of resources and staff. There have been some improvements. The budget has gone from €44 million to €56 million this year. There have been improvements in the maternity services, which have almost a full complement of staff now, whereas before they were working with less than half the staff required. Portlaoise has always been on the back foot....

Topical Issue Debate: Hospital Services (22 Nov 2017)

Brian Stanley: There is €100 million at stake here, not to mention lives.

Topical Issue Debate: Hospital Services (22 Nov 2017)

Brian Stanley: It is very disappointing that the Minister, Deputy Harris, is not here to address this issue. This is not the first time he has not been present when important debates on Portlaoise hospital are taking place. Only a week ago, he failed to turn up for another debate on it. This hospital is on my doorstep. I have campaigned with others for over 20 years because of the constant threat to...

Rural Crime: Motion (21 Nov 2017)

Brian Stanley: I welcome the opportunity to speak on the motion. As Deputy Ó Laoghaire said, while we agree with the thrust of the motion, questions arise about some of its elements. Needless to say, rural crime is causing great concern and constant fear. Crimes are being committed on farms and businesses and against ordinary householders. It is not an exaggeration to state that unfortunately many...

Other Questions: Electric Vehicles (21 Nov 2017)

Brian Stanley: The decision of the Commission for the Regulation of Utilities, CRU, has left the situation in limbo. I listened carefully to the Minister in regard to the charging points. The CRU in its paper said there will be no further funding of the assets through network charges and went on to say it expects the ESB to arrange the sale of the assets. We have 1,946 electric cars in the State. The...

Other Questions: Electric Vehicles (21 Nov 2017)

Brian Stanley: That is because there are so few cars.

Other Questions: Electric Vehicles (21 Nov 2017)

Brian Stanley: That is all fine and dandy but we are talking about reducing our carbon dioxide emissions and we are not doing very well on that front. I do not understand the sense of urgency being given to this issue because we are way behind. There is very little mention of home charging points and there are question marks over whether the grid can sustain the load if several people with electric cars...

Other Questions: Broadband Service Provision (21 Nov 2017)

Brian Stanley: In the interests of being helpful, I suggest that Questions Nos. 45 and 54 be grouped together because they are on the same topic. Both questions deal with electric vehicle charging points. I make the suggestion in order to move things along.
