Finance (No. 2) Bill 2013: Second Stage (Resumed) (12 Nov 2013)

Jerry Buttimer: It is a budget about getting people back to work. I realise Sinn Féin and perhaps the Acting Chairman might disagree on some of the aspects of the budget but they will join me in welcoming the fact that the Government is putting people first, creating jobs and putting our country on a sound economic footing. We must recognise the sacrifice and the role played by our citizens.

Finance (No. 2) Bill 2013: Second Stage (Resumed) (12 Nov 2013)

Jerry Buttimer: That is a first, Acting Chairman. This has been piloted by the Minister for Finance. Let us put it in perspective because this is about job creation. I am referring to the 9% VAT rate, the small and medium enterprise job creation stimulus, the home improvement scheme and the endgame of the troika leaving the country. We must consider the regions as well. I wish to speak about Cork in...

Report of the Joint Committee on Transport and Communications: Motion (8 Nov 2013)

Jerry Buttimer: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy White, to the House and compliment him on his work in this area. I also want to acknowledge the work of the former Minister of State, Deputy Shortall, in the preparation of the alcohol strategy and legislation. In fairness to the Minister, Deputy White, he has driven this in Cabinet with the Minister for Health, Deputy Reilly, and taken decisions on...

Jerry Buttimer: Deputy Dooley is not for any reform.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: End-of-Life Care: Discussion (Resumed) (7 Nov 2013)

Jerry Buttimer: I thank our guests for coming before us and making their presentations. I apologise for the stop-start nature of the meeting; democracy in the House means that we must suspend proceedings to enable members to vote.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: End-of-Life Care: Discussion (Resumed) (7 Nov 2013)

Jerry Buttimer: Where does religion fit into the end-of-life care scenario? It is a massively contentious issue or is that no longer the case? I was struck by Dr. D'Alton's comment on the tyranny of positivity. Will he develop that point? My brother was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year and we were informed that we should always be positive about his condition. I hate to say it but even though...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: End-of-Life Care: Discussion (Resumed) (7 Nov 2013)

Jerry Buttimer: That is a fair point.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: End-of-Life Care: Discussion (Resumed) (7 Nov 2013)

Jerry Buttimer: We will resume in public session. Deputy Neville had asked a question. I do not know to whom he directed it.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: End-of-Life Care: Discussion (Resumed) (7 Nov 2013)

Jerry Buttimer: Does anyone want to answer it?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: End-of-Life Care: Discussion (Resumed) (7 Nov 2013)

Jerry Buttimer: On that point, is certification and training sufficient? There is nothing worse than if one goes in for bereavement counselling and gets a negative response. That compounds one's grief.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: End-of-Life Care: Discussion (Resumed) (7 Nov 2013)

Jerry Buttimer: Sure, go ahead.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: End-of-Life Care: Discussion (Resumed) (7 Nov 2013)

Jerry Buttimer: Has Mr. Allen any comment?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: End-of-Life Care: Discussion (Resumed) (7 Nov 2013)

Jerry Buttimer: I was struck by what Mr. Allen stated in his presentation about the issue of a retirement community for LGBT persons. Have there been advances in that model being unfurled or developed, or even in its embryonic stage?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: End-of-Life Care: Discussion (Resumed) (7 Nov 2013)

Jerry Buttimer: I will ask one other question on that, given that I am a member of the LGBT community. In the context of the palliative care and end-of-life care for men and women who are in the LGBT community, has there been a perceived changing of attitudes in terms of next of kin given that we have seen the changes in civil partnership? Is that filtering down into the day-to-day running of wherever?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: End-of-Life Care: Discussion (Resumed) (7 Nov 2013)

Jerry Buttimer: I thank Ms Keegan for her excellent presentation.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: End-of-Life Care: Discussion (Resumed) (7 Nov 2013)

Jerry Buttimer: Sorry to interrupt Deputy, but there is a vote in the Seanad. Would the Deputy mind allowing Senator Marie-Louise O'Donnell make her contribution?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: End-of-Life Care: Discussion (Resumed) (7 Nov 2013)

Jerry Buttimer: We will suspend until after the vote in the Seanad. I will allow Deputy Neville finish his contribution and we will suspend then.
