Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Fossil Fuel Divestment Bill 2016: Discussion (27 Jun 2017)

Paddy Burke: I welcome the Minister of State and congratulate him on his elevation and his new portfolio and wish him well, and welcome the rest of the delegation. I take it from the Minister of State's speech that the Bill, as drafted, would require big changes to comply with current Government policy. If those changes were made would the Government take the Bill on board?

Seanad: Order of Business (21 Jun 2017)

Paddy Burke: The Leader might invite him to the House to discuss how we might expand the country's tourism product. We have great products - cycling, fishing, golf and walking - and it is much easier and cheaper to pursue them in Ireland than in any other country in Europe. For instance, Ireland is probably the cheapest place in the world to play golf. The accessibility and number of golf courses make...

Paddy Burke: I welcome the Minister of State to the House and congratulate him on his re-appointment. I wish him well for the years ahead. I welcome this piece of legislation that is in effect closing a loophole that was left open when the other powers were transferred several years ago from the Central Fisheries Board to Inland Fisheries Ireland. Seanad: Order of Business (13 Jun 2017)

Paddy Burke: I ask the Leader when he intends to make time for the House to debate the Inland Fisheries (Amendment) Bill, which has passed all stages in the Dáil. I understand there is a loophole in section 309 of 1958 Act that needs to be closed, so I want to know when he intends to provide time to deal with this. I wish the Taoiseach the very best of luck in his retirement. He has done an...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Motor Insurance Costs: Minister of State at the Department of Finance (1 Jun 2017)

Paddy Burke: Most of the ground has been covered. With regard to the training of judges, we have seen quite recently that some judges have taken quite a tough line on the claims being rewarded but in other cases they seem to take a very soft approach. Is any training being provided for judges to update them on a new book of quantum, for example? Is there any specific training or are they supposed to...

Paddy Burke: There has been much public comment about some awards given recently. One would wonder about some of the decisions made by some judges. I welcome what the Minister of State is saying. I hope that it is an area that will be monitored because whether it is through education or judges, it is important that systems are in place to monitor how this happens.
