- Road Traffic (Amendment) Bill: Report Stage (Resumed) (2 May 2018)
Brian Stanley: On a point of order, there are a whole lot of Deputies here tonight who represent rural Ireland on these benches and the other ones. We all represent rural Ireland. Nobody has a monopoly on that. That is a point of order.
- Order of Business (1 May 2018)
Brian Stanley: Page 125 of the programme for Government contains a commitment that the Government would, as a matter of urgency, update wind farm planning guidelines within three to six months to offer a better balance, etc. That commitment was made over two years ago but we still have not seen the guidelines. The previous Government also promised guidelines in this area. Four Ministers later, we still...

- Select Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Radiological Protection (Amendment) Bill 2018: Committee Stage (26 Apr 2018)
Brian Stanley: I support the amendment from the Green Party. I raised this on Second Stage. It is a crucial issue. On the risk to health, it is supposed to be the second biggest cause of lung cancer after nicotine. It is a serious issue. I note the Minister's statement that all new homes are being fitted with radon barriers. I welcome that but there is a question there, particularly in the counties...
- Select Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Radiological Protection (Amendment) Bill 2018: Committee Stage (26 Apr 2018)
Brian Stanley: That is a fluffy response. It talks about multi-departmental responsibility and is long-winded and convoluted. This is a straightforward issue. There are maps. The Minister correctly states there is a website. The website tells us there are areas of concern, including Mountmellick, Ballylinan and Graiguecullen. I would ask that some of those areas be included in the pilot project....
- Select Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Radiological Protection (Amendment) Bill 2018: Committee Stage (26 Apr 2018)
Brian Stanley: In regard to amendment No. 3 - I say this to try to be helpful - we recognise there is weakness in it. The Minister spoke about it being pressed. He will also notice he was not tripped up with it, and he could have been. The committee should discuss that matter with the Minister. We need more information in regard to the 2002 legislation. I do not want to labour this point-----
- Select Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Radiological Protection (Amendment) Bill 2018: Committee Stage (26 Apr 2018)
Brian Stanley: Amendment No. 13 relates to how professionals, such as physiotherapists and chiropractors, will be dealt with in the future. I know a further statutory instrument will deal somewhat with this area under the Basic Safety Standards Directive, but we need to consider these professions in the context of this Bill. They may be excluded from taking or accessing X-rays and questions are being...
- Select Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Radiological Protection (Amendment) Bill 2018: Committee Stage (26 Apr 2018)
Brian Stanley: I am happy for the Minister to so do, as long as the issue is being addressed. It might be best to regulate this issue through statutory instrument.

- Topical Issue Debate: Brexit Issues (25 Apr 2018)
Brian Stanley: The State relies on oil it stores in Britain and the North. Joined-up thinking will be required in respect of this issue and I ask that it be given special attention. Given his brief, the Minister of State will understand that without energy, we will not have industry, jobs and many other things. It is crucial, therefore, that we are able to turn on the lights and have power, including gas...
- Topical Issue Debate: Brexit Issues (25 Apr 2018)
Brian Stanley: We are coming to a crunch time on Brexit. The back stop does not have legal standing, and nor did it. It was a statement. I wish to raise the issue of energy, which is of major concern. We are dependent on Norway and Britain for much of our gas, with a pipeline coming through Britain. Some 40% of our electricity is generated from gas, and if this line is cut or tariffs are put on it,...
