Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Road Safety Strategy (3 Nov 2015)

Dessie Ellis: 1179. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport his plans to put a winter ambassador programme in place to support local efforts by a range of stakeholders, including rural post offices and An Garda Síochána, to get food and fuel to homes where people may not travel when roads are ice-bound, or to help get school routes salted within local communities. [37812/15]

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Departure of High Performance Unit Head Coach: IABA and Sport Ireland (28 Oct 2015)

Dessie Ellis: I thank the witnesses from both associations for coming here. There seems to be a big conflict in respect of what actually happened. Mr. Walsh is saying that it was not down to monetary issues yet the IABA is saying that it was down to these issues in terms of long-term contracts and their consequences. That seems to suggest that there were serious problems. The negotiations lasted eight...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Departure of High Performance Unit Head Coach: IABA and Sport Ireland (28 Oct 2015)

Dessie Ellis: I have one further question. Does Mr. Kirwan see a difference between a head coach and a person involved in performance? I am under the impression that the problem lies in the fact that perhaps he does not see Billy Walsh as anything more than a coach, and to be a high performance-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Departure of High Performance Unit Head Coach: IABA and Sport Ireland (28 Oct 2015)

Dessie Ellis: My observation is that there is something in the position with which the association is not satisfied. From what I can see, the problem seems to be that the association does not accept that Billy Walsh had certain other qualities apart from being head coach.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Departure of High Performance Unit Head Coach: IABA and Sport Ireland (28 Oct 2015)

Dessie Ellis: That is what I mean.

Leaders' Questions (22 Oct 2015)

Dessie Ellis: It does not add up.

Order of Business (21 Oct 2015)

Dessie Ellis: Following the recent tragic deaths in Carrickmines and the subsequent reaction of residents in blocking the resettlement of displaced families, could the Taoiseach organise a debate on discrimination against the Traveller community so that we can speak about the rights and ethnicity of that community and the blatant bigotry that exists in our society?

Order of Business (21 Oct 2015)

Dessie Ellis: Does the Deputy accept everything MI5 says? That is his problem.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Sport Ireland: Chairperson Designate (21 Oct 2015)

Dessie Ellis: I thank Mr. Mulvey for his presentation and wish him the best. I respect his honesty. He was passionate about the way he sees this. I was surprised that he was so straightforward in terms of what has happened. It is a great pity that we have Mr. Mulvey here to talk about all the issues around Sport Ireland but have ended up debating the whole Billy Walsh issue. I will touch on it...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Sport Ireland: Chairperson Designate (21 Oct 2015)

Dessie Ellis: I have seen some of the developments. The committee has it on the list of things to do and we will make a visit.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Sport Ireland: Chairperson Designate (21 Oct 2015)

Dessie Ellis: I raised the point because there is a huge conflict between the general sporting industry and the horse racing industry in trying to prevent it getting a grip in the way that it is a big sport in America, Wales and France. It is also very commercial.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Emissions Readings for Volkswagen Cars: Discussion (21 Oct 2015)

Dessie Ellis: I thank Mr. Himmer and Mr. Nolan for their presentation. The first reaction of most people to this issue has been the scale of the problem, not only here but across the Continent. The reason this continued from 2009 and was only discovered in 2015 is difficult for anybody to understand. If the problem is confined to the EA189 engine and there are three different versions of it and if it is...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Emissions Readings for Volkswagen Cars: Discussion (21 Oct 2015)

Dessie Ellis: Are there tax implications?

Written Answers — Department of Children and Youth Affairs: Youth Services Funding (21 Oct 2015)

Dessie Ellis: 89. To ask the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs for a breakdown of funding for youth services and supports in west Wicklow from 2011 to 2015 to date; his plans to improve these services by providing, for example, a Garda Síochána diversion programme or outreach services, to address the growing demographic need and recent increased levels of young persons being out of school...

Written Answers — Department of Education and Skills: Education Welfare Service (21 Oct 2015)

Dessie Ellis: 144. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills if she is aware of the problems being experienced in west Wicklow relating to the lack of provision for 12 to 16 year olds who have been expelled from school, including no visits from an educational officer or social worker in over a year, no intra-agency collaboration across administrative boundaries; and her plans to improve this situation....

[36693/15]

Proceeds of Sale of Aer Lingus: Motion (20 Oct 2015)

Dessie Ellis: First, I will comment on how the debate has been scheduled. The provision of just five minutes per speaker on such an important topic is very disappointing, particularly given that it will pass through the Seanad without even any nod to a debate. The discussion on the distribution of €335 million from the controversial sale of the State's share in Aer Lingus warrants a real debate....

Written Answers — Department of Health: General Practitioner Services (20 Oct 2015)

Dessie Ellis: 447. To ask the Minister for Health the authority that a general practice has to ban a patient who is in receipt of a medical card, from its services because the person made a complaint to Dublin City Council regarding the parking of cars of the staff of the general practice outside a person's premises as they were a traffic hazard and a danger to children on the road. [36171/15]
