Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Business of Joint Committee (27 Nov 2019)

Marc MacSharry: As Vice Chairman.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Business of Joint Committee (27 Nov 2019)

Marc MacSharry: At that meeting, I questioned the CEO of the Shannon Group about it going the independent route rather than staying with Dublin Airport. The chairman of Fáilte Ireland was at the meeting for a different reason, and because of his background with Ryanair, he threw in a few nuggets of information which turned out to be false. He claimed that the worst thing Cork Airport ever did was stay...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Business of Joint Committee (27 Nov 2019)

Marc MacSharry: That is good.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Business of Joint Committee (27 Nov 2019)

Marc MacSharry: I agree very much with Senator O’Mahony. I would love to see the committee take a position. This clearly has gone on for a long time and is likely to go on for a considerable period more with the various reports. I think our primary concern in the Oireachtas is the programmes, the people delivering them and the children. As of today - I am conscious we were all celebrating a good...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Business of Joint Committee (27 Nov 2019)

Marc MacSharry: I totally agree with everything that was said. All I am suggesting is that because it is going on so long, maybe we can achieve both.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Personal Powered Transportation: Discussion (27 Nov 2019)

Marc MacSharry: I am not remotely offended. My concern is the fact that the same pair of hands that goes through the 500 submissions is the only pair of hands that got a hold of the Bill. That Bill came back with an instruction to kick it out and that is what the Government did. That Bill is officially before the House. What was voted on was that the Bill not be read a Second Time for a period of three...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Personal Powered Transportation: Discussion (27 Nov 2019)

Marc MacSharry: I do not want to eat into Deputy Rock's time.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Personal Powered Transportation: Discussion (27 Nov 2019)

Marc MacSharry: I will come back to it. Deputy Rock should go on.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Personal Powered Transportation: Discussion (27 Nov 2019)

Marc MacSharry: I welcome the witnesses from the RSA and thank them for a great briefing I received recently in Ballina. Anybody who has not been there should make an appointment to go. In light of comments made in the media recently, which I do not want to go into, based on my experience, I can speak about how impressed I am with the organisation, its approach and the professionalism of its team. I can...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Personal Powered Transportation: Discussion (27 Nov 2019)

Marc MacSharry: Of course.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Personal Powered Transportation: Discussion (27 Nov 2019)

Marc MacSharry: The Deputy can get the train to Ballina if he can stuff himself on to it.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Personal Powered Transportation: Discussion (27 Nov 2019)

Marc MacSharry: This is always an issue for me. I alluded to it when we met. It comes up from time to time. Can the witnesses tell us how much the TRL report cost?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Personal Powered Transportation: Discussion (27 Nov 2019)

Marc MacSharry: Is that sterling or euro because it is UK?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Personal Powered Transportation: Discussion (27 Nov 2019)

Marc MacSharry: I know it does not seem like a lot but I have read it and I would say all the witnesses could probably have written it on their lunch break. It is a literature review so anybody with access to any university library and Google could have written it. I am not saying it as a criticism of the witnesses in particular but this is the culture we have in the public service. There is a significant...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Personal Powered Transportation: Discussion (27 Nov 2019)

Marc MacSharry: I hear Ms Murdock but with the best will in the world, there was nothing in the 46 pages that said that TRL thought the RSA should do "X". TRL set out what happens in the US and Belgium, the case studies, the 40 pieces of literature it reviewed and its recommendations. I do not think there is anything in the recommendations that was not in my Bill and I only read this in recent days....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Personal Powered Transportation: Discussion (27 Nov 2019)

Marc MacSharry: That is a resource issue. Twenty more lashes for the Government.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Personal Powered Transportation: Discussion (27 Nov 2019)

Marc MacSharry: I think Mr. O'Leary-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Personal Powered Transportation: Discussion (27 Nov 2019)

Marc MacSharry: A master's student could have done this except the RSA would have had him or her for the whole year. He or she could have been given ten reports to do. My point is made.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Personal Powered Transportation: Discussion (27 Nov 2019)

Marc MacSharry: It needs to be made again and again in every committee because that is the problem.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Personal Powered Transportation: Discussion (27 Nov 2019)

Marc MacSharry: It is a great report. The next time the RSA is throwing around €30,000 and wants a report like that, it should give me a call because I, and many people like me, would happily pull it together for that kind of wage. Regarding the opening statement, it is a case of 20 lashes for whoever drafted it. No legislation is proposed at this time. It was not just produced. Regarding its...
