- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Financial Services Union: Discussion. (8 Dec 2020)
Marie Sherlock: I thank the Irish Financial Services Union for the presentation and for attending today. I echo the Chairman's comments on Ulster Bank declining our invitation to be present here. It speaks volumes about that bank's willingness to engage. This seems to be confirmed by Mr. O'Connell's reports of how Ulster Bank has engaged with the Irish Financial Services Union in the process of cutting...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Financial Services Union: Discussion. (8 Dec 2020)
Marie Sherlock: I thank Mr. O'Connell. My next question was going to be about branch banking. The example Mr. O'Connell has given eloquently sets out the stress felt by branch workers at the moment, especially Ulster Bank employees. Mr. O'Connell has articulated a vision for the combination of branch banking with online digital banking. Are there good international examples of banks that have got this...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Financial Services Union: Discussion. (8 Dec 2020)
Marie Sherlock: I thank Mr. O'Connell.
- Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme (2 Dec 2020)
Marie Sherlock: I thank the Minister of State for attending. This matter relates to the range of supports to encourage people who are out of work to take up training and skilling opportunities. The reason I raise is it I was approached by a woman a number of weeks ago who is a former Debenhams employee. She has spent many nights on the picket line and is reliant on social welfare supports. She has...
- Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme (2 Dec 2020)
Marie Sherlock: Any of us who has ever spent a period out of work know that days, weeks and months are vital in respect of the time needed to reskill or retrain. Those weeks and months should not be wasted. It is not good enough for the Minister of State to say that the PUP is going to expire in March and, therefore, people who are in receipt of the payment should not be able to access those State-provided...
- Seanad: Irish Nationality and Citizenship (Naturalisation of Minors Born in Ireland) Bill 2018: Committee Stage (2 Dec 2020)
Marie Sherlock: I thank the Minister. The concept of home is a very powerful one. It relates to a sense of belonging, a sense of community and it is the anchor in many of our lives. For those of us with a home it means that whatever the misfortune, ill health or crisis there is always a sanctuary. If one talks to people who are homeless they will talk about the gaping hole that it leaves, and about the...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Brexit and Readiness of Businesses, Employees and Communities: Discussion (2 Dec 2020)
Marie Sherlock: I thank Ms King of ICTU, Mr. O'Brien and Mr. Willoughby of IBEC and Mr. Murray and Mr. O'Hara of Border Communities Against Brexit for attending this meeting of the committee. I echo the comments of Senator Gavan. I am alarmed that we have a situation whereby IBEC is proposing an enterprise stabilisation fund or scheme, particularly for the food and drink sector, and ICTU is proposing a not...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Brexit and Readiness of Businesses, Employees and Communities: Discussion (2 Dec 2020)
Marie Sherlock: Obviously IBEC will have done its own internal research so I ask Mr. O'Brien to please outline IBEC's pay and investment plans for 2021.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Brexit and Readiness of Businesses, Employees and Communities: Discussion (2 Dec 2020)
Marie Sherlock: With regard to the concerns articulated about the common travel area and workers' rights, particularly EU workers, is there any more that the Irish Government can do to protect workers on the Border in the circumstances that were outlined earlier? At the start of this year it was announced that there would be a fund of €25 million provided for Border communities and people have...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Brexit and Readiness of Businesses, Employees and Communities: Discussion (2 Dec 2020)
Marie Sherlock: Can I get a response from Mr. O'Brien?
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (1 Dec 2020)
Marie Sherlock: I echo Senator Boyhan's call for a debate on the red meat sector and the serious issues that arise from the HSA's report. The Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment should also be party to that debate. I raise the issue of the pay of contract cleaners. As we all know, contract cleaners are some of the lowest paid across our economy. My question, which I ask the Leader to direct to...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Implementation of Duffy Cahill Report: Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment (25 Nov 2020)
Marie Sherlock: I thank the Minister of State his attendance. We have heard a great deal this morning I want to know what is new, in concrete terms, arising from the Minister of State's opening statement and comments. I appreciate there has been considerable discussion and consultation with stakeholders but we are at a stage where we need to understand and have a clear roadmap as to what precisely will...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Implementation of Duffy Cahill Report: Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment (25 Nov 2020)
Marie Sherlock: I am not asking for the list of actions. I want a timeline.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Implementation of Duffy Cahill Report: Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment (25 Nov 2020)
Marie Sherlock: When does the Minister of State envisage he will have those employment law amendments. On 4 November, Nessa Cahill made it clear that the implementation of the recommendations of the Duffy Cahill report can be exclusively undertaken within the employment law sphere. I want to get a clear timeline from the Minister of State on when the amendments to the legislation will come before the Houses.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Implementation of Duffy Cahill Report: Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment (25 Nov 2020)
Marie Sherlock: Do we have a clear time schedule or not?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Implementation of Duffy Cahill Report: Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment (25 Nov 2020)
Marie Sherlock: I will ask about that in a moment. I want to understand where we are with the employment law changes.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Implementation of Duffy Cahill Report: Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment (25 Nov 2020)

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Implementation of Duffy Cahill Report: Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment (25 Nov 2020)
Marie Sherlock: No, this is important in terms of there being a sense of urgency, or otherwise, about this.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Implementation of Duffy Cahill Report: Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment (25 Nov 2020)
Marie Sherlock: To be clear, the report's recommendations go beyond that. The Minister of State indicated earlier that the State cannot create a system where one worker is treated more favourably than another and spoke about the desirability of having a register of collective agreements. Is it desirable that workers be able to access collective agreements?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Implementation of Duffy Cahill Report: Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment (25 Nov 2020)
Marie Sherlock: I am asking about the desire that workers should be able to access a collective agreement. Ireland stands apart from many other countries in not recognising the right of workers to engage in collective bargaining.
