- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Effects of Recent Storms on Fishing Community (13 Feb 2014)
Martin Ferris: It is important the skippers and crews of the white fish boats that have been tied up for some three months now, who up to now have not received one cent, which as Deputy Ó Cuív said may be the responsibility of another Department, are provided with some income. I would like to see both Departments working together to ensure that applications for social welfare by these people are...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Effects of Recent Storms on Fishing Community (13 Feb 2014)
Martin Ferris: I thank Dr. Beamish for his presentation. The scale of the damage done up to last Friday was mentioned in the presentation but, given what happened yesterday and what may happen later this week, we will have to re-evaluate the whole situation because many areas took an awful pounding yesterday, particularly in the south and south west. The work that is to be carried out on piers and...
- Recent Flooding: Statements (12 Feb 2014)
Martin Ferris: I have not seen what happened today but I am told what happened before is minimal compared to it. I do not know whether people's insurance will cover them. People in places in Limerick will not be covered. We need to be there for people politically and all parties in this Chamber must work together to try to get the best possible result for them. Where necessary, we must declare a...
- Recent Flooding: Statements (12 Feb 2014)
Martin Ferris: There is no doubt that what is happening today and what has occurred in recent weeks and months must be classed as a national emergency. The homes of people in Limerick, where the Minister of State, Deputy Jan O'Sullivan, lives, Cork and elsewhere have been flooded in recent weeks. Water can do significant damage in a house; it destroys carpets, floorboards and everything else and nothing...

Where we believe we can improve it, we will table amendments. The witnesses' points are of help in formulating how to address this. The witnesses suggest providing that the Minister shall set and review...
- Other Questions: Fish Farming (11 Feb 2014)
Martin Ferris: I thank the Minister for his reply. I find it difficult to comprehend the delay in the renewal of out-of-date licences. This delay is having an effect on the potential for job creation The Minister says he is doing the best he can and I do not dispute it. However, the Minister should know that there is a lot of concern about the delay which is quite frustrating, to put it mildly.

- Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Single Payment Scheme Appeals (11 Feb 2014)
Martin Ferris: I thank the Minister for his reply. The manual inspections of which I am aware have often been successful, primarily due to the fact that while there appeared to be afforestation in parts of land, in fact the grazing potential around it was being utilised. Does the Department have enough staff to carry out those manual inspections? I would refer most people who come to me to go down that...
- Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Beef Industry Issues (11 Feb 2014)
Martin Ferris: There is a belief among farming organisations that Teagasc played a part in the manipulation of the market. Is the Minister satisfied that this is not the case? I have read in newspaper print accusations made by farming organisations, which are quite powerful, against Teagasc as regards developments in the bull market.
- Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Beef Industry Issues (11 Feb 2014)
Martin Ferris: I thank the Minister for his reply. There is a perception, which is well-founded at times, in the wider farming community and all farming organisations that there is a cartel in the beef processing sector. I can remember Government Deputies making the same argument I am making here when they were on this side of the House. It has been stated by farm leaders that Teagasc was implicated in...
