Other Questions: Youth Services Funding (27 Mar 2014)

Éamon Ó Cuív: There has been a significant reduction in funding. I know the approach of the Department for Public Expenditure and Reform is to just take money across the board, without discriminating in terms of where the cuts fall. Certain things do not change, but at the end of the day, €50 billion is being spent in current expenditure and choices have to be made. Would the Minister agree that...

Other Questions: Youth Services Funding (27 Mar 2014)

Éamon Ó Cuív: I could not agree more with the Minister on her last point. I know that when we had the midnight soccer programme running, there was a 30% decrease in anti-social behaviour in various housing estates. Obviously, idle hands create difficulties. Does the Department still recognise the particular challenges faced by those in the RAPID areas in the context of youth services? Does the Minister...

Other Questions: Child Care Services Funding (27 Mar 2014)

Éamon Ó Cuív: 10. To ask the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs the total funding available in 2014 for assistance with child care; the means test that applies for this assistance; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [14018/14]

Other Questions: Child Care Services Funding (27 Mar 2014)

Éamon Ó Cuív: My question relates to support for child care. I heard the earlier debate on the issue and am interested in the trends in funding and the plans the Minister has to ensure that adequate funding is available for child care.

Other Questions: Child Care Services Funding (27 Mar 2014)

Éamon Ó Cuív: There has been a lot of discussion and kite flying by the Minister's colleagues about tax breaks that might be available in the future. Would the Minister agree that if money is available for tax breaks, it should be made available to those who are working and who do not benefit from the subventions referred to by the Minister, in the main? Tax breaks should be introduced in a targeted way...

Other Questions: Youth Services Funding (27 Mar 2014)

Éamon Ó Cuív: 9. To ask the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs the programmes in place to assist with the development of youth services; the funding for these for each of the past three years; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [14019/14]

Other Questions: Youth Services Funding (27 Mar 2014)

Éamon Ó Cuív: We are doing well, and Galway East is in the Chair.

Other Questions: Youth Services Funding (27 Mar 2014)

Éamon Ó Cuív: It is a west of Ireland takeover. I believe that investment in youth services is very important because we know that the cost of not having youth services, particularly for young people growing up in disadvantaged communities, actually leads to further costs for the State down the road. My question is what funding is available, whether the trend of the funding is up or down and what action...

Written Answers — Department of Public Expenditure and Reform: Coastal Protection (27 Mar 2014)

Éamon Ó Cuív: 79. To ask the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform the funding that has been approved to date to the Office of Public Works for the purposes of coastal protection works in Galway city and county; the projects approved for such funding in Galway city and county; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14556/14]

Written Answers — Department of Health: Haddington Road Agreement Negotiations (27 Mar 2014)

Éamon Ó Cuív: 207. To ask the Minister for Health the implications of the EU Working Time Directive and subsequent Irish legislation for Irish residential care staff; if time spent on call while working in residential care facilities overnight is considered working time for the purposes of the legislation; if not, the reason for same; if workers on such duties are entitled to receive the minimum wage...

Order of Business (26 Mar 2014)

Éamon Ó Cuív: Will the heads of the official languages (amendment) Bill be published before Easter? Will the consumer protection and competition Bill be published before Easter? The latter Bill has been on the cards, as an A-list Bill, since autumn 2012 and is very urgently needed.

Order of Business (26 Mar 2014)

Éamon Ó Cuív: I am glad to hear that.

Other Questions: Beef Industry Issues (26 Mar 2014)

Éamon Ó Cuív: There are huge concerns about the concentration of ownership within the beef industry. In view of this, would the Minister be in favour of the introduction of a beef industry regulator, as is the case with other industries which are highly concentrated in terms of ownership?

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Beef Industry Issues (26 Mar 2014)

Éamon Ó Cuív: First, the Minister is probably familiar with the Derrypatrick project and the understanding of farmers that processors, Teagasc and everybody else involved in the project were encouraging them to produce 18 month old bull beef because it was not economical to produce it at the age of 16 months. Now we suddenly find the same processors will not buy such beef.

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Beef Industry Issues (26 Mar 2014)

Éamon Ó Cuív: The problem is that the factories want 16 month old bull beef. Does the Minister believe the farmers were badly advised? Second, as the Minister is aware, there is a problem in having cattle slaughtered in the North of Ireland.

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Beef Industry Issues (26 Mar 2014)

Éamon Ó Cuív: I understand the Minister believes the problem is related to the specifications of retailers. What discussions has he had with them on this issue?

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Beef Industry Issues (26 Mar 2014)

Éamon Ó Cuív: I seek the indulgence of the Chair as I have a third question. I will be brief. There was a live animal exporter with us yesterday and he explained to us that a company that operated ferry sailings from Dublin was refusing to take live cattle from Dublin. However, he has consistently, without difficulty, carried live cattle from Belfast to Britain.

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Beef Industry Issues (26 Mar 2014)

Éamon Ó Cuív: Has the Minister done anything about that matter?

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Beef Industry Issues (26 Mar 2014)

Éamon Ó Cuív: I kept to the time limit.

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Beef Industry Issues (26 Mar 2014)

Éamon Ó Cuív: It is the Minister's way to waffle on-----
