- Seanad: Access to Cancer Treatment Bill 2012: Second Stage (11 Jul 2012)
Marie Moloney: Notwithstanding the veto afforded to the Minister under section 5, the section 3 provisions leave open the possibility that any patient could go to court on the basis that he or she has an entitlement to a particular drug regardless of the price. That is my major concern. Senator Crown spoke about a drug which, because it cost â¬100,000, he could not justify prescribing in order to prolong...
- Seanad: Wildlife (Amendment) Bill 2012: Committee and Remaining Stages (4 Jul 2012)
Marie Moloney: I thank the Minister for bringing forward the Bill. While I am not a hunting person, nor do I claim to be, there are many who are and who were worried about the validity of their hunting licences. At least they can continue to hunt. I welcome the Minister's statement that he is coming in to speak on biodiversity. Last week, the Minister and I raised the green flag in our local schools for...
- Seanad: Rent Supplements: Motion (4 Jul 2012)
Marie Moloney: I congratulate the Sinn Féin Senators on tabling this motion today. Whether or not we agree with them, they have raised an issue that needs to be aired and debated on the floor of the House. I am very disappointed with the attendance in the House because I had expected that Senators would be clamouring to speak on this issue. The Minister stole half of my speech. She must have been...
- Seanad: Credit Guarantee Bill 2012: Committee Stage (28 Jun 2012)
Marie Moloney: I welcome the Minister of State to the House. Like other speakers, I know we are very much aware of the small and medium enterprise issue. When we had the debate in the Seanad on job creation, everybody spoke about the flow of credit to small and medium enterprises. The days of the big multinational companies coming to this country are gone, unfortunately, at least for the time being. We...
- Seanad: Credit Guarantee Bill 2012: Committee Stage (28 Jun 2012)
Marie Moloney: What the amendment and the Minister are proposing is the same, except that the amendment includes a timescale. The scheme is new and will take time to get off the ground. Twelve months is relatively short time when looking for trends. The Minister has promised to undertake a review and I hope that as a result of it he will invest more money in the scheme.
- Seanad: Credit Guarantee Bill 2012: Committee Stage (28 Jun 2012)
Marie Moloney: He has committed to undertaking a review and in 12 months he will be back here roaring and screaming if the report is not ready.
- Seanad: Credit Guarantee Bill 2012: Committee Stage (28 Jun 2012)
Marie Moloney: Except that he has not provided for a timescale. We can hold him to account in the matter; that is our job.
- Seanad: Credit Guarantee Bill 2012: Committee Stage (28 Jun 2012)
Marie Moloney: As an honourable man, I am sure he will come back and let us know the outcome of the review, as promised.
- Seanad: Flood Relief (27 Jun 2012)
Marie Moloney: I thank the Minister of State for taking this Adjournment debate. I apologise for not welcoming her when I was in the Chair earlier. Another Senator jumped in before I had the opportunity, but I will welcome her now. My matter relates to the town of Rathmore in County Kerry. I am unsure as to whether the Minister of State is au fait with it. The Cullavaw river flows behind the town for...
- Seanad: Flood Relief (27 Jun 2012)
Marie Moloney: I thank the Minister of State for her good reply. It was my understanding that it had not been confirmed that these works were suitable for the minor works scheme. However, the response clearly lays out that the council has been notified several times. I will raise the matter with the county manager and engineers and proceed from there.
- Seanad: Offshore Oil and Gas Exploration: Statements (27 Jun 2012)
Marie Moloney: As there are no other Members indicating to speak, I call on the Minister to respond.
- Seanad: Order of Business (27 Jun 2012)
Marie Moloney: I thought the Chair had forgotten about me. I am sure all Senators are aware of the Jigsaw project and the Jigsaw network. Today young people appear to have much to deal with, such as study, work, friends and family relationships, drugs and alcohol, and it all gets on top of them. If they need immediate help in my area, Jigsaw Kerry is one of the places to which they go. The Jigsaw...
- Seanad: Order of Business (26 Jun 2012)
Marie Moloney: I want to highlight a problem that has arisen in the medical card applications office, although perhaps this time it is not of its own making. It has come to my attention that child care expenses will not be taken into consideration in processing medical card applications unless a registered childminder is used. We all know that in Ireland there is a long-standing tradition of childminding...
- Seanad: Order of Business (20 Jun 2012)
Marie Moloney: This week is national carers' week. What better time to highlight the good work being done by carers all over the country by publishing and implementing the national carer strategy? Last week the Minister of State at the Department of Health, Deputy Kathleen Lynch, indicated that she would publish the strategy prior to the summer. I wish to speak about the changes that were introduced in a...

Marie Moloney: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Sean Sherlock.
- Seanad: Euroscience Open Forum 2012: Statements (14 Jun 2012)
Marie Moloney: I thank the Minister of State for his informative and detailed statement. There are certainly busy times ahead. I call on Senator Averil Power.
- Seanad: Euroscience Open Forum 2012: Statements (14 Jun 2012)
Marie Moloney: Senator Power's time is up.
- Seanad: Euroscience Open Forum 2012: Statements (14 Jun 2012)
Marie Moloney: I ask Senator Power to finish up because there are others wanting to speak.
- Seanad: Euroscience Open Forum 2012: Statements (Resumed) (14 Jun 2012)
Marie Moloney: We have the time, so the Senator might as well.
- Seanad: Seanad Report on the Rights of Older People: Statements (13 Jun 2012)
Marie Moloney: Another area I believe is vital in supporting older people is education. Informing the elderly of their entitlements is very important as many do not know their entitlements. This is highlighted in the national positive ageing strategy, and rightly so. Many older people would benefit from basic computer classes and, in many cases, classes in the use of mobile phones and texting. In a...
