- Other Questions: Pupil-Teacher Ratio (9 Apr 2014)
Éamon Ó Cuív: What is staring us in the face is the fact that the number of one-teacher schools will increase from four to 60, as the Minister's policy progresses. In regard to island schools, can he confirm that if the number of pupils falls below eight for one year, the number must then increase to 20 to get back the second teacher? Does he think it is likely or possible that will happen in schools on...
- Other Questions: Pupil-Teacher Ratio (9 Apr 2014)
Éamon Ó Cuív: We had the case of the school in Inis Meáin where the number of pupils dropped for one year but the school authorities were told that they will have to meet the new threshold figure - we appealed that decision in every way possible and made personal appeals to the Minister - which now is 20 to get back the second teacher. It is not a question of the school bringing the number of pupils...
- Other Questions: Pupil-Teacher Ratio (9 Apr 2014)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I sincerely welcome that. That is very progressive and important. I am glad the Minister has recognised the unique community situation on the island and, in many cases, the unique cultural heritage that we have inherited. I have often pointed out that we keep crying over the Blasket Islands, but the culture that was there is long gone but that culture is alive and well on islands like Inis...

- Other Questions: IBRC Mortgage Loan Book (8 Apr 2014)
Éamon Ó Cuív: The Minister has some arrangement in place, but if a client is in dispute with the financial institution that has bought his or her loan, where does he or she go to enforce the rights he or she would have been able to enforce if the institution was covered by the legislation as a covered institution? Is all of this not putting the cart before the horse? Why did the Minister not introduce...

- Other Questions: IBRC Mortgage Loan Book (8 Apr 2014)

This leaves many customers of what was the Irish Nationwide Building Society without the consumer protection and recourse to the Financial Ombudsman they enjoyed previously. What action is the Minister taking to ensure this protection is afforded to these mortgage holders?
- Other Questions: IBRC Mortgage Loan Book (8 Apr 2014)
Éamon Ó Cuív: It was difficult to catch everything the Minister said, but am I right in thinking that the legal position is that the arrangements the Minister has made have no legal status and are totally unenforceable and that this is a case of what might be called light-touch regulation, whereby there is some kind of moral understanding, but if a dispute arises people have no recourse to the mechanisms...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Overview of Land Use: EPA and Teagasc (8 Apr 2014)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I wish to make a supplementary point. We have not seen GLAS, but the agri-environment options scheme, AEOS, was task driven. Is Dr. Ó hUallacháin saying that a high-conservation status area requires the right level of farming to be maintained, that being, what was done traditionally and no more or less? In places like the Burren, farming went from one extreme to the other, for...
